Hi all, in need of some advice re snow chains for my M3.

Planning a trip to the alps this winter and want to take the M for a roadtrip (driving). I will need snowsocks/chains of some sort in case Les Gendarmes require their use on the trip up the mountain. I am already running winter tyres allround (255/40/18 rear) but everything I read tells me they will not cut it as far as police are concerned and I would be turned back unless I chained up.

This leaves me 3 choices as far as I can see:

1. Snowsocks on the rears - not sure how well they can cope with extended use ie more than a few hundred metres, as thought they were to get you out of trouble only.

2. Actual chains - don't fancy ripping my arches apart however to do this.

3. Michelin easy grips ( http://www.tyresonline.net/index.php?act=viewDoc&a... ) only issue here being they don't do the size i need, but I could get some and try the fit.

Does anyone have any other options or experience which could help here?

Thanks in advance smile

I think you will find that Snow socks will not cut it from a legal perspective, I.e. you could still be turned back.

Can't speak for E46 but for my E92 I got some Weissenfells Clack and Go which we're excellent and definitely worth a look. Only take about 10 minutes to put both wheels on and 2 minutes to remove.

Thanks for the response. Do you mean the clack and go or the clack and go quattro?

Depends what resort you are off to. It may be low enough that your winter tyres are enough.

Tignes. I'm not convinced winters will cut it, it's a long way up.

Pretty sure I have the clack and go pro-tech. Bought from www.snowchains.co.uk - I hired from them a couple of times before I bought my own. Might be worth looking at.
