I think the A38 is pretty long - goes from at least Bristol to a little north of Birmingham (maybe further).
I always thought the A38 was a longun. Not sure it counts though as it seems to break up in a number of places these days. It goes a little further than just north of Birmingham though. Seems to terminate in Mansfield.MysteryLemon said:

Plymouth to Mansfield, I think, but A1 must be longer.I've thought that the A38 would be the Route 66 of the UK with all the interesting places it goes through, or near.
The A1 is the longest by some margin (410 miles as stated, according to Wiki). It is also one of the most interesting, being ancient, although the modern A1 deviates from the Great North Road in many, many places. I always thought the A1 would be a good subject for a lavish coffee table book.
The A38 (292 miles, ibid) certainly is an interesting road. It has a desolate quality between Derby and Birmingham which I quite like. It's like a road through nowheresville. I often use it as an alternative to the A42 when crossing from the M1 to the M5.
I drove down much of the Fosse Way (230 miles, ibid) a year or so ago when going from Newcastle to Swansea. I had time on my hands and it was a summer's evening. It was a real pleasure in my 129. I had a good supper in a village pub somewhere towards Cirencester. You don't get village pubs on motorways! It added little more than an hour to the journey time and was so much more agreeable.
