Injuries from riding
Discussion
Following on from this in the "pictures from today's ride" thread....
Probably best to use the Spoiler tag for any gruesome ones though
I'll start with these from my silly low speed fall last September which left me with an almighty bruise on my thigh from the handle bars and a broken radial head in my left elbow.

So, what 'ya got?

did a bit around ashton court this morning, empty of mtbers but full of sledges, skiers, snowboarders.... conditions were great, ignitor up fornt, xc fire pro at the back, pretty much spot on for the ice and snow. managed to fell off, elbowed myself in the kidneys and am preparing myself for a bruise of epic proportions tomorrow!!....
...and remembering the rather impressive road rash picture on here a while ago (can't remember who it was now though) I thought about an injuries thread.Probably best to use the Spoiler tag for any gruesome ones though

Great, another chance to post my 'ouch' photo! This is what landing on your head from 8 1/2 ft in the air at 16 mph does to you! I hit the table-top in the gully at Swinley far too fast about 18 months ago and did this;

Injury list was something like;
Fractured skull in 3 places
Fractured right eye socket
Broken cheek bone
Filled the right eye socket with gravel and forest floor - took several liters of fluid to see the eyeball again!
Swollen brain/sever concussion (although some would argue that is not possible)
Bloody clot on the right eye
Broken right shoulder
Broken right shoulder socket
3 x broken ribs
Broken wrist
Lost lots of skin on my face and right hand side
On the upside I won the 'old blokes that should know better' feature and bagged a free pair of trainers!

Well that's just killed off any competitive element in this thread.
Did you finish the ride before calling for the ambulance?
Did you finish the ride before calling for the ambulance?

Sorry!
Funny enough, we were doing one run of the gully before heading back to the car park - so more or less yes. I was out cold for 15 mins and my mates phoned for the paramedics, when I came to apparently I jumped up, took my skid lid off and took a huge swig of juice before announcing that I didn't need an ambulance and that I would go to A & E later if I needed to, then promptly collapsed! Because I had fallen over in the middle of the forest a helicopter had been dispatched to scrape my sorry butt off the forest floor, it was on its way but was re-routed to Oxford to attend a car crash - otherwise I would have got to fly in a whirly-bird!
I cannot praise the services enough, first responder was with my within 20 mins and an ambulance was driven into the forest to fix me. Apparently I was in the back of the ambulance in the middle of the forest for well over an hour before they were happy enough that I was stable enough to be moved. I went to the ambulance station a few days later with the biggest hamper of drinks, biccies, choccies etc I could find, then popped back to A & E to say my thanks.
TBH I have about a month 'missing' where I can remember certain specific things but most things were a blur, I am hugely grateful to the paramedics and task force of A&E staff who prevented my spill becoming much more serious!
Ouch....
Nowhere near as dramatic, or any pictures, mostly the usual and not all at once.
Most memorable riding injuries from the last 20 years :-
Left Collar bone, required surgery
Left upper arm fracture (didn't know about it)
Left hand fractured twice possibly more
Left wrist fractured in 3 places + right wrist ligaments damaged (bars failed)
Ribs more than once (possibly the worst of the lot)
Left knee torn Cartilage
Can anybody spot a pattern here?
The best has to be a bruise on my left shoulder that actually left a scar.

I came off on split diesel in October. For the third time in my riding career.
First time I went one way the bike the other, into a building and trashed te forks, cracked the frame. I got epic road rash. Second time, clipped in and me and bike slid to a glorious halt.
Third time, I landed on top tube (my mate reckons I was trying to jump clear...) and got this bruise.

Looks like nothing, but refused to stop throbbing. Still, with 5 weeks of work to go I ignored it. Turns out I've a Y shaped crack in the bone. Which is healing nicely on its own, thank goodness.

This is what happened to me after a sedate sunny afternoon pedal with the family when I decided to shoot off on my own and pedal the Black Route at Thetford Forest in flip flops ...

On the way back in some sand my bare toes crashed into a protruding tree stump on the down stroke, a wedge shaped piece of the stump levered toe number two's nail clean off! Bloomin painful for such a tiny injury.

Some good ones coming in here
MadDad, how long ago was your crash, and how quickly were you back on your bike? I'm guessing it was quite a while.
I crashed on the 23rd May 2011 and started light road riding on the 11th July, but I was only riding short distances once or twice a week. In September I started to ride a lot more regularly and further but again they were all on the road, the thing that hurt the most were the ribs, it was almost a year before they stopped hurting when I took a deep breath.

Rotational fracture of the left wrist. screws and a plate, one surgery.
Broken, crushed, detached and indeed lost tip of the right ulna, screws, a plate, some staples and 2 surgeries.
Did the both in one sitting June 2009, 3 weeks in hospital, 6 weeks with both arms in casts, 6 further weeks with just the right, 6 months physio and 3 trips to theatre. 4 months before I could even sit on a bike and hold myself with both hands on the bar, 6 before I could actually pedal the thing 8 to go off-road again (give or take).
Lots of little steps to recovery along the way. Challenged myself to a trip to Whistler, was riding the bike park by Summer 2011.
I'm still not 'right' my right arm is pretty weak, I pretty much ride one-handed with my right hand kind of just resting on the bars, braking and shifting, my left hand does all the 'holding on' stuff and I go a bit 'funny' even after the smallest of offs.
Still loving it though!
