That was my first thought too.

A bit of csi on the way he"s parked makes me wonder how else it could have happened.
It doesn't look like he slid sideways into the ditch.

Agreed - looks like he could have been reverse pulling a car out from the opposite ditch, strap snapped and arse-ended where he landed

Looks all twisted up, as though it has been under tension, and snapped. he may have slid off, but having towed plenty, that is what first struck me.
