Battery drain problem
Discussion
.. on any 911, my 996 included, causes are alarm/immobiliser/tracker/old battery..
most will only last 2-3 weeks from full charge, a lot depends on how much you use it and how much time it spends getting 'alternated'.. if you don't use it much don't expect it to last much over 2 weeks.

Is it a common problem for a 996 turbo battery to drain down my itself? If so what causes it?
If you do not drive the car enough to recharge the battery yes. Remember too that in starting the engine the battery gives up some charge which has to be replenished along with any charge lost over time. The car has a small electrical load present even when shut off. I do not know how long the battery can go with this load but I've parked my Porsches for as long as a week, in the case of the Boxster for 16 days, with no problems upon my return. Cars on lots sit a lot longer with no use and worse experience engine starts with way too little engine run time to recharge the battery.
Recently with a replacement of my Turbo's battery I've been watching the volt meter and it takes 20 or more minutes of driving before I see the volt level drop from "14" to something (though not much) under that number. I interpret this to mean the battery has been recharged and the electrical demand on the alternator drops as a result.
Remember too these batteries have a finite life no matter how well they are treated. They are a wear item. Lack of use. Short use. Cold weather. The luck of the draw. All of these (at least) play a role in battery life.
