This is a friend of mine who lives a few doors down from me. It's lucky he was in the car (also lucky that the would-be-thief wasn't aggressive).

Don't leave your car unattended, even if you are in the middle of nowhere!

"A would-be thief attempted to steal a snow-covered car while the owner was sat inside with the engine running."

Did someone place the man there?

"When the man opened the door, he found the Neil Kane, 49, doing paperwork while he waited for the BMW to warm up before scraping the snow off it."

Traditionally do names not forego a definite article?

I start mine up with one key then lock the doors (manually, not with the remote) when I need to defrost it\warm it up on my drive.

Dont think its illegal, just a bad idea on a street etc.

Out in the boonies i can leave car to warm defrost while sorting out sandwiches etc but i wouldnt do it if i lived in a town, as insurers will just laugh and hang up if its stolen to some extent.

Clearly not if they leave the car idling, because it's about the worst way to do it. smile

As for keeping myself warm, I have this clever newfangled invention called "clothes" that don't require time to get up to operating temperature.

Exactly my point. The average woman going to work isn't going to give two hoots about the engine but certanly wont want to sit a car whose inerior temperature is about -4C no matter how many clothes shes got on.

My rubbish 20 year old convertible de-mists in the time it takes me to brush the snow off the windows.

What is it that people gain from leaving their car running for 5 minutes?
Is it just for a slightly warmer car to sit in while wearing their winter clothes?

[mildtrolling] Or do people wear summer clothes all year and shiver to the conditions? [/mildtrolling]

In the case of the diesel skoda this morning it was to remove the ice from the inside of the windscreen! Being a diesel with no clever heater (like you get in proper countries) it takes bloody ages to warm up inside.

and I always drive naked

It's for when the windscreen is covered in a frozen on crust of ice/snow and you can't be arrised to scrape it off/remove with de-icer, obv.

This is where my 13yr old Ford Focus excels, as well as having go anywhere M&S tyres on it the quick clear screen is great, also no bugger is going to try and nick the old heap. The BMW stayed at home today!

Similar happened to me, years ago in my company C2 VTR (no less!) I' d returned home, parked up the drive and stayed put inside the car and gave my girlfriend a ring (on the phone, this was NOT a proposal). Used to chat in the car on my phone a lot, it was always in the small hours and I'd wake mum up if I walked in gabbing. This beats whispering down the blower in the kitchen!

Anyway, seconds later I see this shadow appear and my door opens. 'What can I do for you, sir?', I may or may not have said. All I remember was his sunken cheeks and black teeth. Absolutely drug addled, he looked like death. He muttered something about confusing me for 'his mate', before bolting. The poor fella was obviously trying every door for any slummy/Sat nav/cds/cigarettes or whatever he could lay his hands on.

Dont run your engine at idle for any period whilst the car is unattended.

Its not good for the engine (for numerous reasons) , it will annoy your neighbours and it wastes fuel.

If you want a warm / defrosted car in the morning use any of the following:-

a garage overnight
a cover for the windscreen (these work great btw)
a fan heater on an extension lead for 5 mins prior to you leaving.

I seem to remember that the answer is yes, it is illegal to leave a car running unattended on a public road. Not an issue on private land.

Yes. Sort of.

I wear a shirt and trousers to work, and hate driving with a jacket or coat in.

So I drive in a shirt.

I regularly go outside and start a car, then go back inside and sort out lunch, make a coffee to drink in the car, whatever, while the car heats up a little bit, although to be fair, that's really only until the windscreens and mirrors have defrosted.
A gentleman never drives wearing a jacket. Never.

The article it was linked too is brilliant - there are some proper gems in it! I can't stop laughing!!

Incidentally I call BS on Mr Kanes entire story but why let the truth get in the way of a nice anecdote... OP is your 'mate' on Pistonheads btw?

Here are some quotes from the article:
"so when the door was opened by a man in camouflage, I knew what was happening and stayed fairly cool,"

Whats the appropiate camouflage these days to steal a car? A white snow suit? Polar bear outfit? I can't imagine!! I want to know what the would be theif was camouflaged as!!

Of course you stayed 'cool' - the door had been opened and it's FUH-REEZING outside!!

"The man expressed his surprise before running off and driving away in a red Audi,"

He drove off?? HMMmmmm -> so he was going to trade his red Audi for a BMW was he!! And leave his car at the crime scene? Of course he was...

"in his car, which had blacked-out windows"

Of course would be theif drives around in a car in blacked out windows.
rolleyes

Fulfilling another stereo type of general 'scum' right - the type that would steal a car.

This is one of my favourites:
"I'm sure he was an opportunist wanting to steal a car, but it was completely covered in snow, so he couldn't see me inside.

WTF? How did you get in the car if it was 'completely covered in snow' ! did the snow not at least shake off the door so you could get inside?

And here to me is the proof the entire story is BS:
"I'd only been sitting in my BMW for 30 seconds"

A shame Mr Kane is not on to defend himself - so you started the car and sat in it in 30 seconds... AFTER you got in the car and presumably closed the door - so in that 30 second period a man happened to be driving down the road (he did not see you get in the car so the 30 second timer starts AFTER you got in), saw your car started, parked his blacked out windows- red audi, got out of his car, walked to your car and tried your door to find you inside...

What a load of complete and utter tosh but thank you for the sts and giggles.

It's a specific offense under Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regs. 1986. Regulation 107. This act also makes it an offense to leave the engine running unnecessarily whilst parked, even if you are seated within it.
