I have been looking for something to replace the current E60 530d, and have thought about a few cars, new 5 series, new a6, even an evoque/x5
Just took a fancy to the new XF
Anyone have one? driven one? any experience at all, comments appreciated

This would be the 3.0d V6 model, im looking at, not the S unfortunately

My Dad has an S, which I've been lucky enough to ride in/drive a few times, so 80% relevant to the normal one, assuming similar suspension setups.

Diesel engine is excellent in refinement, the torque in the S is spectacular, although it won't sound as good as the BMW six-pots. The 8-speed gearbox suits it perfectly with lovely, silky shifts, can certainly pick up its skirt if you want to, and the paddles work well for really pressing on.

Interior is very nice, seats are very comfortable while being supportive, endlessly adjustable, and because they're linked to the AC system they can be heated or cooled, only marred by the infotainment system which is quite clunky to use.

Ride is excellent, even on huge 20" wheels, but sporty enough that you won't feel like you're wallowing. Lovely and quiet at motorway+some speeds, great for effortless wafting. Electronic handbrake works very well too (not as good as a real lever, but I didn't find it intrusive).

Chances are it won't feel as modern as an F10 5 series or the latest A6, but it does feel reasonably special to sit in, which is more important to me.

Criticisms? The interior would feel 100% more special if there was a bit less plastic in there, the rear window doesn't heat up very much, and the mirrors folding are a bit noisy. Other than that there's not much I can criticise it for.

You have probably echoed my only conerns thus far, being the interior looking dated compared to the newer 5 series and new A6
( A6, does look stunning inside from pictures) i havent seen it in the flesh as yet.
I had read the autobox in the XF can ge a little laggy pulling from roundabouts , junctions , you dont mention that
also the touchscreen being a little slow
but apart from that , all reviews seem to be very positive

I've not experienced any sluggishness - it's still an autobox, so it's not 100% infallible, but in my experience it's never had the wrong ratio to hand at a junction etc.

The touchscreen is the worst thing about the car imo - the gubbins behind it are excellent (the sat-nav is very good indeed), but it feels like using a 10 year old PC. Once you get used to it, it's fine.

Look further into the technology of the engine design and you will find even the 2,7L is way in advance of anything German.

I didn't say it was a bad engine, the 3.0 is a magnificent lump and decently advanced, with variable vane gubbins etc. What I said was that the straight-6 BMW ones I've heard sound a bit better, whereas that can sound a bit rattly.

I hired an S for a wedding car to complement the old Jag we used as the brides wedding car, had it for a long weekend and it was very impressive I couldn't fault it and a very good MPG.
