I've used graphogen in the past, seems to work ok.

IMHO, one the the most important things is to get it to fire up and get the oil pressure up fast, not too much cranking.

First question is have you increased the valve spring load? If not then your normal 'plenty of oil squirted about' technique will do.
If you have heavy springs on a radical cam then an assembly lube is worth doing. Then start the engine bring it up to about 2000rpm and keep it there for 20 minutes. Low revs could allow the high contact loads between cam and lifter/follower to cause galling or cold welding which will destroy a cam in minutes.

Im using a Newman cam [fast road ] with 160 lb springs and their cobalt insert followers and have almost decided to use Graphogen +Lucas build lube , it may be belt and braces but on a tight budget I cannot afford to wreck the cam . They quote that the 3k rpm for 20 mins bit is not applicable because of the material they use for the cam [chilled castiron ] ,any body got thoughts ops on the above?

If you said you were going to design a steering column with a steel shaft in a steel bearing all the engineers amongst us would throw their arms in the air and start wailing yet we have cam lobes under extreme load running at god knows what speeds and think nothing of it.

Despite what they say I would still use assembly lube and the start-up procedure.

Remove the dizzy and spin up the pump via a drill and adaptor till oil apears out of the spray bar holes and covers the cam.

Once started keep it at 2.5k for 10 mins ....

Moly is best. I used Penrite moly lube.

Whatever you use, make sure it's viscous enough to stay on the cam lobes and not drip-off before the engine is started; some of the lubes sold and too thin if the engine will be standing for any length of time before it's started.

back in time when I did a fair bit of building ep 90 gear oil was the thing if as you say the lump was going to stand for some time plus liberal amount of the engine oil to be used in service ,it's awhile since I did any serious builds and I wondered if any thing new was on the scene I will probably go with some thing like Penrite or Graphogen plus priming the system and a good splash of engine oil before starting and hope that the great spannerman looks kindly on me
