AA Automatic renewal - Haven't been a member for 1.5 years!
Discussion
I just received a renewal notification through the post, which is lucky as I'm going to be moving in a few months.
It says 'Welcome back to AA Breakdown Cover'!
I didn't want to be welcomed back! I don't own a car right now and I haven't had one for 1.5 years, which is when I cancelled my membership.
Now I can't get through to them because 'all of their operators are busy with a high volume of breakdown calls', and then just stops the call.
It's pretty great. I want to shoot them. When and if I do get through to them, I'm going to ask them to remove all details they have of me from their system. Surely they can't automatically charge me for something I haven't had or asked for in years. It's like Tesco sending me 50kg of grapes and charging me for them because I once bought grapes from them.

They did this to me after I moved. You should have received notification via post, but my new address mine was mysteriously lost despite the call I made to update them being logged.
I would continue to try and get in touch with the AA to solve it.
Alternatively ring your bank, cancel the direct debit and request an indemnity claim for the amount. You get the cash back instantly and the bank then pursue for the amount.
If it's on the credit card I'd have it classed as a fraudulent transaction.

If it's on a credit card, it's actually not that easy to stop future "mistakes" from being made, short of changing the card number by asking for a replacement. If it's on the credit card I'd have it classed as a fraudulent transaction.
Direct Debits are easy to cancel.

Had the same despite cancelling three years ago. Gave them a call and they said I'd only suspended the account despite telling them I want it cancelled at the time, then they tried to get me to renew by offering a (too small) discount. Told them no and to CANCEL the account. Fine they say, you'll get a letter of confirmation in a week.
One week later, get a letter from the AA... containing a renewal reminder.
