Folks. I'd just like you to know that Tracker no longer fit a rechargeable back up battery to their systems.

What this means is that if your main battery runs flat, it then switches to the back up and then when that runs out you are no longer protected.

Not only that but the robbing bds then charge you £100 to replace it.

Sharp practice or what? Having paid a lifetime subscription for the Tracker service, I then get a call to say the backup is flat and we need to come and replace it. I think they are on with making a lot of dosh out of this one?

How old is the car?

Rechargeable batteries do stop working after a long time, like a normal car battery does, so it could just be that it's expired.

Did they actually tell you that they "no longer fit rechargeable batteries"?

I seem to remember it being pretty clear in the info pack i got that the battery would go flat if the car battery was flat or disconnected, even went on to give expected hours and advice to tell anyone working on the car to minimise any battery disconnect time.

Just got an email this morning:

"As a valued customer, we'd like to inform you that batteries can die at any time of the year but it's more likely in winter when the cold temperatures hit car batteries hard.

If your main vehicle battery goes flat you can be reassured that your TRACKER has a non-rechargeable back up battery. This design feature maximises the effectiveness of the product and allows the unit to continue operating even if the vehicle's main battery is disconnected.

TRACKER monitors your battery backup performance and if we identify that your battery backup requires a replacement we will contact you. A replacement will have a cost associated with it so it pays to look after your battery during the colder months.

With that in mind we've put together some simple tips to help you keep your battery in good shape and you on the road.

Thank you for choosing TRACKER. For more information please refer to your TRACKER welcome pack or contact us at servicesupplier@tracker.co.uk

And I must say I am not at all "re-assured that the tracker has a NON-RECHARGEBLE BATTERY" fitted! And even less impressed that this appears to be a design feature??

Had this on al 3 of the cars I have fitted with tracker. Needless to say they have lost £450.00 in revenue this year, an personally I'm not so sure I would want the cars back if they were stolen TBH.

Glad to know I'm not the only miffed off person out there as a result of this.

What really annoyed me was the fact I thought I'd paid a lifetime fee and that was it - only to be confronted with another charge! (And a oner for a battery is beyond a joke!

Wow, I'm really surprised by that. Absolutely shocked that they think this is an appropriate "solution".

That is a joke I often have cars with disconnected batteries for a day or more while work is being done on them so that means the customers will end up having to shell out for a new battery on top of any repair bill!!!

I bet it wasn't made clear that the thieving bds would charge you £100 a pop to replace the damn thing though?

This is good to know as I recently discovered there is a tracker in my car. Fees didn't seem too bad but what put me off was the insurance company telling me it would INCREASE my premium.

I paid for lifetime membership when I bought my car new and that was the last I ever heard from them.

Certainly now I think the car is at little risk so just being able to say I truthfully I have it for insurance purposes is enough, whether it works or not.

I would expect it to be fitted with a primary lithium type battery, which have very high capacity and long standby life.

Cant remember if they had an exact price but the £100 ish figure seems familiar and doesn't surprise me, especially if it includes fitting. I have no love for tracker but as far as i am concerned they have been pretty up front on the presence of a non rechargeable battery and that precautions should be taken to protect its charge or there will be a charge. The fact they sent you an email at this time of year to warn you that letting the main car battery go flat could cause the tracker battery to be replaced shows me that they are not trying to rip you off, could they have fitted a Li-Ion, probably but then it would have probably cost £50 more in the first place.

A couple of things to bare im mind. Firstly, maybe it depends on the type of tracker that is fitted whether or not the battery recharges. For example cheaper tracker or more expensive type?

Secondly, it's just a thought. If Tracker are telling you that the back up battery is flat then that will produce other issues.

1. Tracker can't find the car or warn you it's being stolen depending on Tracker type.

2. The insurance company will ask Tracker why the car cannot be tracked or found.

3. The insurance company WILL refuse to pay out as the insurance policy agreement and terms and conditions of the policy WERE NOT met.

It's just a possibility but we all know the insurance companies will try and refuse payment where possible don't we? You're choice!

My tracker was fitted when I got the car and I activated it as it was a condition of the insurance. I too have the documentation explaining that the backup is non-rechargeable though I don't think it mentions replacement costs. As far as i'm aware the battery in mine is fine, I always ask people not to leave it disconnected if possible etc. but I was wondering what sort of charge they held i.e a day of flat battery or a week or a month. Anyway interesting to hear they actively monitor them I was wondering about the state of mine but I guess I don't need to.
