Why is it a "privilege" to drive
Discussion
If it were free, and clean, and stress free, and there were no hold ups or accidents... Then maybe it could be called a privilege. However like the rest of you, I have passed a car test, and my bike test, pay tax on my salary in order to be wallet-raped at the pumps in order to go to work. Then my fuel tax is given to work shy people and the army so they can kill foreigners in wars we don't want. Then I pay insurance, that is taxed, servicing that's taxed, am not permitted to use any degree of performance... And despite paying through the nose, and having to jump through hoops to stay legal, some people call it a "privilege ". Being a royal is privileged. This isn't. We earnt this, don't let them tell you it is a privileged. It's your right as a fully paid up member of car club UK. Stop being fooled, it is our right once we pass our tests. It isn't something we have been given for free. And we subsidise public transport, even when there is often not public transport available for us. And this is a privileged? Get real. We're being given taken for fools here.
"It is our right, once we pass our test"
Sorry to be argumentative and disagree but I must point out that driving is done under licence, which is why you have a driving licence, which can be withdrawn if you are naughty. It isn't a right at all and never has been. We have certain inalienable rights which cannot be withdrawn and driving isn't one of them.

I think you misunderstand the term Privilege.
You have basic rights, in this country a right to a free education, basic health care etc. You don't have a right to a car or driving, these need to be bought or earned. So I would class that as a privilege?

it's generally used to 'deal' with those who consider driving to be one of your 'ooman rites ,innit'

"is given to work shy people and the army"Whatever your argument is, it has nothing whatever to do with British military personnel.

Quite. You have basic rights, in this country a right to a free education, basic health care etc. You don't have a right to a car or driving, these need to be bought or earned. So I would class that as a privilege?
The OP seems to present a (quite poor but nonetheless) argument that driving is a privilege rather than a right, and then concludes it by saying it's not a privilege.
Strange thread is strange.

Inflated senses of entitlement.......
Taken from the "People's attitudes" thread in the Lounge.Just like Further Education, going to College, Uni and Driving is a choice you make and fund yourself, there is no 'right' to any of them in the sense that the Government should pay for you to do it.
You cannot be arbitrarily prevented from driving at the whim of the state without due process. If it worked like a shotgun licence, where the Chief Officer of Police must be "satisfied that the applicant is a fit and proper person to be entrusted with firearms", I could accept the idea that it is a privilege.
