I've seen a well specced high mileage one pop up for shed money (£850). I know they are typically old mans cars but this one has a full years MOT on. Has anyone tried to run these as a shed before or is this a car to avoid at all costs?

The model in question is a 2.5 v6

Any advice welcome smile

Chain cam decent drive if a tad thirsty. It's £850. Just run the thing into the ground.

owned one from new. a 51. Sold it to my bro who has kept it for 5 years. He was looking vo replace with Audi q5 etc but likes the jag enough to keep running it.

It was a 2.5 auto se.

Only problem I had was auto lunched itself after about 4 years. jag paid 75% of replacement.

Ive always thoigjt it was a great car.

This ones a manual and I only do about 5k a year so MPG isn't really an issue unless they do about 10mpg :$. Might look into it a bit more then as there seems to be a few for under £1k.

A manual, hmm, quite rare if I remember right. You should get "at least" 25mpg.

Definitely, then, as there won't be too much to go wrong and at that money, it really does become a no-brainer smile

I've got the 3 litre V6 auto. It's a good car albeit a little on the thirsty side......

If you have seen one for £850 get it bought. I paid over £2k for my 2001 car this time last year - not worth much more than £900 now but who cares?

It's a Jaguar. For less than £1k. What more do you need? Oddly I pay less insurance for the Jaguar than I pay for my 1998 BMW!

Work that one out cos I can't.

Shed money and if it works without making any nasty noises from the AWD system then do it. Run it until it dies.

General parts and service items are cheap - just done water pump on mine for £35 as it's the same part as a lot of Fords wink

I have a 3.0 manual with 73k on it. Love it, and it's not bad in the snow smile

Manual box likes slow measured changes but it very smooth.

I've had one & to be honest I thought it was a great car. I'm not quite yet 40 so I'm not old eithersmile

I had mine for about 2.5 years & had to replace the alloys (they corroded & kept leaking air) - I bought new ones (not Jag) for about £350 then sold the crappy ones on Ebay for about £250. The waterpump failed which was a bit pricey to replace and the engine fault light kept coming on. This was a sensor on the exhaust which costs about £10 for the part and about £200 to fit as it involves taking lots of bits off. It's a very common fault & wont cause the engine to blow up so I ignored it. Rear parking sensors were a bit wonky at times - again a common problem but again I didn't bother. Tracking is worth getting checked as they can chew through tyres at a rate of knots. One of the spark plugs is a bh to get at & involves taking something off to get at it.

Can't think of a lot else really. We went all over the place in ours & it never let us down, looked good & was very comfy place to be. Sounded good as well with the V6. Big boot as well.

You'll get stick for "it's a Mondeo mate" which I found a bit odd but you do get uninformed retards in this world unfortunately. A mate of mine drives a Golf but I've never asked him how his Skoda is...

For under a grand I'd go for itsmile

Strange how nobody (including Jaguar) makes much of the All-Wheel-Drive on the petrols - worth its weight in gold in this bad weather and lets face it, you are only ever going to lose £850 in depreciation, EVER! Thats what a new XF will lose in a fortnight.

Ah yes the lambda sensors - £50-60 on eBay new. Have done all mine. Rear bank is the pain in the arse as the inlet manifold has to come off. 3 hours labour.

A said above though, the water pump is peanuts and takes an hour DIY.

UKMIKE 2000, yes, thought that myself about the 4WD system. By the way, is it their own system, or does it's roots lay elsewhere ?

SIX FIEND, does the timing belt not need removing for the water pump to be changed. If so is the 1hr DIY time scale, because you are a mechanic, and have the tools to lock the cams in position ?

There's no timing belt, it's a chain on these smile

Procedure is: Battery and battery tray out. Remove pump belt and pulley (single pulley just push the tensioner to release). Then unbolt the pump. The whole lot is easily accessible, easiest one I've ever done - and no I'm no mechanic, just watching the pennies so do things myself which aren't tricky smile

There's obviously the matter of coolant to faff about with but you get the idea!

As long as you keep in mind that it's a Mondeo then should be a decent drive

and because it's a Mondeo, most of the parts are cheap as chips

The X-Type was based on a modified version of the Ford CD132 platform shared with the 2000 Ford Mondeo.

The X-Type shares about 15 to 20% of the Ford Mondeo design.

It's a Mondeo
