Morning All,

Both the Traction and abs lights turns on solid this morning on the drive into work, while on an icy patch. Astravan 1.9 diesel.

A little investigation, and Neither of these systems now work. Anyone have any experience of this happening? Quick Google suggests it might just be the system throwing a fit due to the ice, and will sort itself, but I want to make sure I am not likely to end up with no brakes at all....

Thanks

It'll either be a low battery voltage on startup, or ice/damp in one of the sensors.
You'll probably find next time out that it's fine.

Did the wheels start spinning a lot? Apparently sometimes this is enough to confuse the ABS and TC systems. Sometimes turning off and back on works.

ETA: Sorry! Just seen that you've already mentioned it! But it does seem, under the circumstances, that this is the case.

At the time, I was in second, with virtually no throttle, allowing the car to catch up with the wheels.

So yes, virtually no grip. Tc tried to fix it, then appeared to stop caring.

I can't turn the traction of in the van, so its a different experience for it not to be on...

sounds more like an issue with a wheel speed sensor to me.

This, it happened to my old car. Sensor fails, ECU no longer receives an encoder signal, throws a fault.

I get an ABS warning light if i spin the wheels too much on snow/ice. It clears if i turn the engine off and on again.

Yup, all fixed. Apparently just wanted to go on holiday for a few mins.

Whatever happens to the ABS/TCS the brakes should still work (catastrophic leaks not withstanding of course). They'll be rigorously tested to make sure an electrical fault has near-as no chance to affect braking.

+1 on the ice in the sensors, happened the other day on my 147 when it was -3 degrees
