I normally give my bike a good clean at the weekend, scrubbing the chain and degreasing followed by a good wash and rinse, finishing with lubricating the chain.

I want to go out on the bike this afternoon but don't have time to give it a full wash so what are the thoughts on giving the chain a good degrease, allowing to stand for 5mins to allow the solvent to evaporate followed by an oil and a ride?

The chain is quite cruddy!

Should be fine I would have thought. After having degreased/rinsed the chain, run it through an old rag so it is touch-dry and then apply the lube. Jobs-a-goodun.

Or, if you don't particularly love your bike, just ride it as it is and worry about cleaning it some other time smile

I recently gave the chain on my winter bike a good old clean - the first one since I don't know when. It's a lot better than it was! Keeping the rust at bay is the key wink

Thanks, I was hopping to avoid a water rinse, just use my Muc-Off degrease widget and then oil.

I went out on mine on Tuesday and it was a bit noisy and just felt, well, wrong.

Unless it's a proper solvent degreaser that you're using, it's probably unlikely to all evaporate before you put some oil on it, so a rinse is worthwhile. Otherwise the oil you put on may come straight back off again...

As I say though, it's going to get filthy and cackky out there today anyway - stick a bit more lube on for now, ride, and clean it some other time!

Note: I do not necessarily always practice what I preach! smile

I'll give it a quick wipe with a tea towel or the sitting room curtains, lube it up and go for a ride. True PH borkage style!

When you're out every day keeping on top of things like chain maintenance is nigh on impossible.

Slightly OT, but I'm relatively new to cycling and wondered if there was a good site/link to the best way and order you should clean the bike (including new oil etc)?

Thanks!

Given a shimano HG chain only costs £10 isn't the idea to just hose it down, spray on some gt85 and replace whenever its getting a bit creaky? It won't be that often.
