According to a quick internet search, one in five new drivers is involved in a crash in their first year of driving (DSA, Learning to Drive: a consultation paper 2008).

This being PH, I was curious to know how much lower our crash statistics were on account of our godly driving abilities driving

For the record, I got away without any crashes in my first year (more luck than skill on occasion...).

Nope.

Although many of my friends did, I went skidding right down a steep bank and into a bush in the back of my mates polo

I crashed my first car twice within the first 2 months of passing my test, it taught me a lot though and I've been driving over 20 years now and I've only had 1 other accident and that was over ten years ago.

Haven't crashed in 16 years of driving. 1st year was more luck than judgement. Remember understeering around a wet bend in to the path of a truck and just managing to get back on to my side of the road, and thinking if either of us had set off 2 seconds earlier I would be dead!

No. More luck than judgement though. On several occasions the car I was about to hit moved.

Slightly crashed, while parking a multi story car park, didn't spot the massive concrete pillar holding the building up when I was reversing.

The following year I parked it in the scenery on it's roof it to make up for the previous pathetic effort and gain back some man points wink

Oh yes indeedy, more than once.

I ran up the arse of a mk3 Cavalier 2.0i L in my Mk5 1.3 Escort so hard you could see the fuel tank and 3 of the Cavaliers doors would not close once they had been opened.

I then reversed the very same Escort into a container in a car park trying to show off, not a proud moment

I despised that Escort, i HATED that car, yet it survived both incidents, i genuinely thought i had written it off the first time, sadly not

I walloped a high kerb at about 20mph trying to avoid an oncoming coach down a narrow high street. Lost my mum her brand new wheel trim frown scared the st out of my little sister too!

Since then I haven't hit anything, even if I've pointed the wrong way down a road unintentionally whistle

In my first year I slightly crashed a few times in different cars being a fool, but never made a claim/wrote anything off and always paid cash for any damage that I did.

  • Drifted a 740 Volvo into a bus
  • Knocked over a lampost over with a Frontera
  • Drove an Astra into the back of a mates mum Saab whilst oogling his sister walking up the road
  • Rolled a Croma into a parked car because I didn't apply the handbrake properly
  • Drove a Metro gta over some pedestrian bollards in the middle of the road, looking at girls again
(I have slightly improved in the past 18 years)

NO... I did not crash in my 1st year, in fact I have never had an accident (driving for 4&1/2 years)
However, I know I am NOT a driving god!... I have been very lucky.

Yep, rolled and wrote off my first two cars that were bought for me by my folks.
I had to save up and buy my own after that. Haven't had a (serious) crash since.

I managed two days accident free, on the third I pulled out of a T junction in the rain and wheel spun into a parked car, after bouncing into the oncoming lane I managed to swerve and avoid one accident only to hit two more parked cars. I've got a little better at it since...

Yep - after 3 months and a trip up and down the autobahns of Germany, I thought I was a driving god.

Luckily, it was a 'oh st' brake too late moment and ended up rear-ending an Audi at about 3mph. Still ended up going on the insurance due to trading paint...

Had a 50/50 with an idiot in the parking space next to me who reversed their Lupo out at the same time I'm trying to swing 5 metres' worth of 607 into an extremely tight space. Punched a hole in their rear bumper whilst not a scratch on mine. Upshot of it, my insurers were done and dusted with it within a week whilst they had to wait months for their claim. Should have taken my cash offer to take the Lupo and fix it then!

The first (and last hopefully) write-off only came last summer after over 4 years of driving.

Rather irritatingly I managed to get stressed out and via poor judgment got my car stuck in a multistory, it was tight but thats no excuse. I did manage to scrape my passenger door and front wing along a post and rip off my mirror, it was a horrible mess. Car in question was a pug 106, so no excuse to to get stuck in a multistory.... bit better now tho!
