The blue goatee
Discussion
i've recently become a dad (save your applause)
now it is well known that when your youngster gets a blueish tinge to their lips and chin (ie the blue goatee) that they need to burp.
What physical mechanism takes place within the body that makes this so?
now before you all scream, "go to mumsnet" - I have, and all i see is 'you need to burp them, they have wind' followed by 'if they have wind, surely they need to poop' followed by 'awww, this is making me broody' Aaaaaargh
bloody brain dead women........
Me man, me need to understand the mechanics of what is going on!!!

This explanation was offered by the internet;
"Its because when the gas in the baby's stomach causes him to breathe more slowly as it is harder to inflate the lungs.
For a young baby, the skin around the mouth is thin making it translucent so the underlying blood vessels can be easily seen. The veins in this area carry blue oxygen-poor blood back to the heart and are more noticeable when the blood has a bluer cast caused by the poor oxygen exchange in the lungs.
This only normally occurs in new born / young babies and is a feature of the immaturity of their circulatory system.
The same effect can happen in babies when they cry loudly, for much the same reasons."
This is unsubstantiated though so could be BS
