Redundancy Issue
Discussion
Hi,
My friends manager (large company) has let her know that there is rumour of redundancies in her job title.
He has said that she will prob. Have to apply for her job in a few months and that if they don't get their own job they may be rehoused in another similar paid role.
He also has said they he has heard that the company might be changing its redundancy payments policy for the worse. Currently a very good scheme exists! Can they just change these terms as and when they want?
Another twist to the story is that she would be on maternity leave a few months after having to reapply......
Help would be great as she seems pretty stressed about it!

Whoops! It's pretty clear who the "friend" is, but it always is (why do people do this?)My friends manager (large company) has let her know that there is rumour of redundancies in my job title.
The company will have to give proper warning of possible redundancies, consult on them, and follow a fair procedure before dismissing anyone.
Ask again when and if the rumour turns into a proposal.
An employer must tread very carefully when an employee is exercising maternity rights.
An attempt to change agreed redundancy terms when redundancies are pending could put an employee in a position to assert constructive dismissal.
