Yes. Another PHer with a morbid fear of death by dentistry. Has anyone had any lower jaw teeth-straightening procedures carried out in their middle-years (early forties here)? I need to get a wisdom tooth and a subsequent refit for a crown prior to any scaffolding going in though.

Will have to be done privately, although an impending Elise purchase will take precedence. wink I know one should not scrimp on the cost of such stuff but I am willing to travel outside of central London for the right treatment at TPS not exorbitant cost.

Driller? Any ideas as to rough cost would be great. Worth a trip across the channel?

I could certainly find out for you Digger although you'd need a "tweak" ever trimester and it would last a couple of years for an adult in general (can't comment further without seeing the teeth), so it would mean fairly regular visits. Good excuse for an occasional hoon?

Otherwise Orly is not far.

If my memory serves me right it's about €3000 but I have a very good Ortho friend just up the road from my practice, I'll ask her.

Well I suppose it was either teeth or oil biggrin General dentistry and implants. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions, PM or on here. I'm just South of Paris if ever you're up this way. You could bring your gym kit, the Salle de Sport awaits!

Thanks for that Driller. I'm still waiting for my appt for getting my wisdom yanked out, but in the meantime received these prices from somewhere in W1 & I quote. . .

1. Upper and lower arch treatment with fixed braces £5500. Single arch case £2950.
2. Treatment with Invisalign braces from £4000.
3. Treatment with lingual braces from £8000.
4. Treatment with removable braces from £750.00

Hmmm . . . guess what? I'd rather pay less

Glup. That is a lot of £££

I have had a couple of crowns done on the NHS. From memory (a couple of years ago), it was less than £200 all in.

Nice modern place, friendly staff. Quick turn around. Good work.

Why private?

My teeth function just fine so this would be considered cosmetic, as well as being an adult and not a child, therefore not available on the nhs.

Apparently adults have bigger wallets too.

Hi Digger, late forties here and currently got upper and lower fixed braces so I can try to answer any of your questions (apart from money, mine are funded). I had to have two molars and an incisor out so hopefully that'll be it for the extractions! The braces have been on since September and the difference so far is remarkable; the teeth are already fairly straight from being all over the place and I no longer get earache from the upper jaw crowding.
Good luck if you decide to go for it.

Blimey, didn't expect that much. I haven't got round to sending an email to my ortho friend yet, I'll get onto it.

Oh right.

Get a big man to smack you in the mush: go to A&E: you'd get it done on the NHS then hehe

David,

I have had recent dental work done. After a quote here of $12,000 I decided to look elsewhere. I had planned a trip to Cartagena, Colombia, and got a recommendation from a Brit there to go to a specialist.

The work done, but it required three visits. The standard of work is higher than in the US, which I believe means higher than in the UK. But of course there is no malpractice insurance.

My problem was bone loss; I am in my seventies. So the first trip only covered the extractions, and putting some material (which he described as concrete) but the he used the word for grafting, as a tree. I was told to come back in four to six months, by which time the "concrete" would be bone. Next time he did the drilling and inserting the titanium screws. He said I should come back in another four to six months to complete the work.

We have cheap flights from Fort Lauderdale to Caracas, so it worked out economically. For you it might not be the best deal.

An alternative is to find a dental school; they are often looking for patients, and the work will be to the latest standards and either free or nearly so.

Good luck,

Wilf.

Alan,

I have spent too many years having drill-happy British dentists' work corrected. Just watch TV with British actors and TV with other country's actors. British dentists have always been the joke of late night comedians.

Hopefully you are correcting this image.

I have to say I was very impressed with the equipment and workmanship of this particular Colombian. Oh, and the results. He specialist in odontology and is known for rehabilitation.

Wilf.

Er...as as odontology is the study of the structure and diseases of teeth, I think you'll find every dentist on the planet specialises in this smile

laugh

We could set up shop: Digger and Driller's Dangerous Dental Division-Teeth ripped out while you wait hehe

Digger, got a message back from my friend. The unknown quantity here is ho long it should take. I don't know whether you were given approximate times but on average for adults it's about 2 years.

She quoted me for "bimaxillary multi-attachment" ceramic (so white in colour, both jaws) brackets-€900 per 6 months so €3600 for the 2 years.

(It would be interesting to know if your No.1 is with ceramic brackets or metal ones).

For tongue side (hidden) brackets this is €2000 per 6 months so €8000 for the 2 years.

If you can get hold of a recent panoramic radiograph (and ideally a cephalometric) and send it to me it could help estimating treatment time.

I'll let you do the €-£ conversion wink

The state of British peoples teeth on Tv as perceived by USA is that its not such a big issue for us..apart from young daytime trashy TV celebs. Bit like drum tight skin on geriatric fading faces on TV....is that what we want? Persil white teeth arent real...even in the States. But heyho..glad you've got a good man in Columbia..nice coffee in the waiting room!?
