Hi, central-london based short-term lurker who has now decided to join the porsche ranks, my only experience so far was an official porsche driving wkend in the BLack forest which sold me on the cars/brand.

looking for a weekend car and plan to only drive about 3000 miles a year! Hoping for some advice on what to purchase, in terms of looks only want either a 997 Cab or a 993 (coupe/cab). Budget £25-35k. And a car with up to 60k miles for 997, and obv higher most likely for 993.

Some questions:

1. If I were to keep a 997 or 993 for 2 yrs like the below, putting on a total of 6000 miles, what price do u think I would get if I were to sell it on then?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

http://www.charlesivey.com/sales/car_details.php?s...

2. What key aspects should I be looking out for? Warranty? Clearly would want a FSH? Difference in earlier & later models?

3. Maintenance costs? Budget for 1-2k pa?

4. Any recommended insurance companies? I had a no claims bonus for 2 years, but that was 6 years ago, so I guess it will have expired. Full UK licence for 8 yrs.

5. Any current cars in the classifieds you would recommend? Any of the above links I posted u recommend?

6. Anything else I should consider?

Many thanks & looking forward to your responses & joining the ranks!!!

Personally, if you're buying as an investment the 993 would be a no brainer. They are two very different animals. I came form a 996 to a 993 but needed to drive the 993 to really fall in love with it. It's modern versus old technology. If you have the chance, go and drive both.

I'm sure some more learned 997/993 owners will be along to give better advice.

Yep I certainly wouldn't mind a drive in a 993 to see how it feels, kind of tempted to go for a car with more modern technology, but hard to rule out the looks of the 993!

Any advise guys on the above questions, don't be shy!!

I'd be coupe 993 all the way, especially if you want to get the purchase price back after a couple of years. Plus I prefer older 911s.

Interesting that the Iris blue 993 states it has OE from new 18inch wheels on it. I didn't think 18s were an option on an earlier 993, especially the Turbos. Had it even come out by then? Nice 911 though and a wad spent on her it seems.

The 993 at Charles Ivey looks like a good original car, and at 20K with that mileage seems a bit of a bargain. Most like women, looks aint everything. Needs further investigation me thinks.

The newer 911s? Softtops? Nah, not my cup of tea, each to their own though.

I reckon they are two totally different beasts, and just looking watercooled and cabs V 993 coupes' I think your prefer a more moden Porsche personally.
I drive an old 993, my mate drives a modern 911 cab. I wouldn't want his, and he thinks mine is something that should be driven around by cavemen and just can't see the attraction of them.

First of all the 993's will hold their value's and if you buy right may even appreciate. The 997 will depreciate the ones youve highlighted have lost c£50k and I would prsume will still lose at least 10% pa.

The 993 is much more of a classic car with a personality and more of an event to drive and doesnt have the engine risks the the 997 is faster more modern car and can feel like many a modern car. You strangely gone for 997cabs and 993 coupes, the 993 cabs are great cars.

Have a look at this site as they seem to have 4 993 cabs http://aporscha.co.uk/porsches-for-sale.php and he likes to advise people.

Warranty wise make sure you have at least £5k coverage on a 997 due to engine risk, less covergae on 993 is ok.

Maintenance wise your budget is plenty for a specialist like Northways.

Insurance wise you can get classic cover without a no claims bonus for £300-£400

Both very different cars and vastly different ownership propositions.

Why not have a drive in both types and see which one "floats your boat", so to speak.

Many thanks for the replies so far!

Have to say I love the look of both, so prob best to drive both. I do have the impression that the 993 will be more of a bumpy ride & I am probably swayed more towards a modern drive/interior...yet a 993 would make more sense financially.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but is it a regular occurrence having potential engine problems with a 2006 or 2007 997? Why year did the later improve version of 997 come out, and would I be better off holding out til one of these comes into my price range?

I find it quite odd seeing many threads on 997 vs 993. They are both great cars of course but they are very different cars with different characters.

It's like trying to choose between an original mini and a BMW mini. No one does that do they?

Totally different propositions.

Whoaaa, the 997 has a bumpier ride than a 993 in my experience, the 993 absorbs better if suspension in good condition.

There is a risk with 997's, more so with Auto's, the RMS upgrade was done partway through 2007 model, sorry dont know the VIN switch over number

Why do so many people think that the leaky rms is a problem? It's a total none issue!

Defo a 993. Buy a well cared for highish miler, as you wont be adding a huge amount of miles to it. Maybe even an S at that money.

I went the other way, from 997 C4S coupe to 993 cab. V happy with the switch. They are very different - you need to drive them both.

Appreciate the responses so far.

Do you think something like this is what I should be looking at if I'm only putting on 3k miles a year:
http://www.safwatcars.co.uk/stock_item/1063/

Or should I look at something more in the 60-80k mileage range?

The coupe looks good. It's hard to appraise cars from an advert, but looking at the subtle mods and the work carried out point towards a cherished motor.

For the best chance of liking a 993's drive, try a varioram Carrera 2.

Any 997 is fantastic, especially the steering, power and modern feel. If you can afford an OPC used with 2 year warranty, then nothing to be scared of.

I've had my 997 C2S Cab for nearly 2 years. Bought from Guildford Porsche and I love it. Will get the warranty extended as its already covered a new gear box and front suspension.

Try somewhere like JZM or 911 Virgin for a mix of air cooled and water cooled.

If you like VW clatter and golf tdi performance then the 993 should be just fine ;-)

Seriously though, try a 928 GTS - beautiful!

Cool, nearly getting close to decisions! tempted to side with a 993

2 questions if i were to go with a 993:

1. what dealers would you recommend for Best Warranty options? what about JZM and 911V that was already mentioned? Who else?

2. Best company for classic insurance for someone Without a no claims bonus...? And cost u think circa £500...this accurate roughly yes?

My 964 used to be insured with RH Classic :

http://www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk/

And I would expect £500 to be plenty for a classic policy.

BUT - your original posts says you "used to have" NCD but it's probably expired now, which suggests you don't have a main policy on a daily car. I think most classic policies dictate that it's a "second" car, and you have a main car. Not sure how easy you will find it to get a classic policy as your only insurance if that's the case.

I know not what the OP has suggested but as a weekend car I would widen your search. I have only driven a 996 c4s and a Cayman, and now own a 996 GT3. The GT3 as a fun car would win hands down. Ample room inside, an amazing drive only draw back is ground clearance. If I had to choose between 997 and 993, I would go backwards for the driving experience. I think you would feel more connected in a 993 or even a 964. Have fun on your search it took me a few years but is well worth the wait and chase.

Eh? What difference would there be in a varioram or pre varioram 993 that would make him decide between a 993 or a 997?
