Id go for the water pump impeller. If its failed the impeller will of either fallen off or split down the centre and the shaft will be turning within the impeller.

Possibly a clogged up cooling system, specifically the radiator. When it overheats if the radiator core equally hot throughout, or doe it have cool spots (assuming you can actually get you hand to the radiator core)? Could also possibly be a simple airlock, flushing the system out and replacing the coolant and ensuring it's bled properly would be the cheapest fix you could hope for.

If that proves negative and if the waterpump has definitely been changed then you are probably looking at a headgasket problem. Far from uncommon on the VRS as they do tend to get thrashed.

Thanks guys.

Supposedly the waterpump has been changed not so long ago, but I have my suspicions...

Will see if I can get that checked out first, then if no luck maybe proceed with having pressure test done for the head gasket - really hoping it isn't that, as could be pricier.

Seems to be quite a common problem, by all accounts - will update if I find a solution.

Thanks.

IIRC, the water pump is cambelt driven on that engine. What mileage is it on? It's common on VAG 4 pots to replace the water pump on the 2nd belt change, along with all the tensioners etc.

The pump might have been changed but there are some really cheap and nasty pattern parts available from that well known supplier beginning with G.

Thanks - supposedly the water pump has been changed recently, but it could well have been a sub standard replacement....

Going to beook it in shortly, see if some tests can be done - just frustrating as it appears to be fine when idling or even when stationary / around town / even spirited driving when raising the revs... It's only under load at higher speeds (usually on a motorway stretch, for some reason) that it happens.

I'm hoping it isn't the HG...
