We had one and they are very capable for 5 people, less so for 7 (depending on the seat package - some have 4 proper seats in the back rather than the bench set up in the 7 seated), particularly if you have luggage.
That car won't be quick but it will be fine for long journeys and should get around 30mpg on the motorway.
Overall, they're a great vehicle to travel in and have excellent seats but they are massive and tyres, road tax etc wont be cheap. The build quality is slightly poor too but if you need an upmarket alternative to an espace, and with a bit of extra ground clearance, they are a great car and handle better than most other 7 seated SUVs I've been in (the X5 or ML will be better all round if you don't need the space).

They're brilliant. Two of my friends with large families have them. There is no alternative really, maybe a Disco. They seem quite reliable. For some bizarre reason, the most popular trim is Sport yet the SE trim is much better. I'd look for good servicing and plenty of meat on the tyres and brakes. Then check everything works.
I really fancy one of these and there is a '07 lwb one I like at the dealer 200 miles away. Before I go and see it, I would like to check that the kiddy seats fit and we like the driving position etc. Therefore, I wanted to nose about at one local to me but none has an old shape in stock. Would checking against a new shape be pointless or would they be the same in terms of the key criteria (driving position, boot space with the rear most seats in use, access etc)?
With 3 kids, the other alternatives are XC90 (looks like a great package overall), S-Max (probably the best, but hardly "premium"), Disco (huge, expensive and reliability horror stories) and er....
