Hi folks

Need a new battery for my Mk1, did a search on EuroCarParts and found one, 42 quid, sorted..... or so I thought.

When I went to pick it up I double checked it was correct, the chap behind the counter asked about my car and when he checked his screen he asked me if it was a standard car, i confirmed then he asked if the battery was under the bonnet. I said no and he then claimed it was not the correct battery. Slightly confused i left it.

So, what battery do i need and where is the best/cheapest place to buy one? Links very appreciated thumbup

hmm. well typically you get gel batteries, but I put a standard one in ours (mk2)

i'm surprised he didn't take it out to your car to see if it would fit?

It should be a gel battery, with two vents and ideally the correct battery clamp grooves. The westco fits all this criteria.

You can use normal batteries but there's a real risk of corrosion from fumes if not vented. Also heard of batteries coming loose and starting a fire when driven enthusiastically.

As I've said before a number of times, my mk2.5 only ever had gel batteries until recently but still showed signs of acid corrosion in the battery well.
I've found the Westco to have a short lifespan (it has a 2 year warranty for a reason) so I've replaced mine with a Philips standard battery which is half the price, fits perfectly and is sealed so should be safe in the boot.

Looking at the battery I have now, I thi k it's just a standard thing so I'll stick to that.

Looking at various sites they all seem to be listed under Mk1 and 2, are they the same size?

I'll see if i get time to remove mine and just take it with me smile

I stuck a "normal" halfords sealed battery in my mk1 when it needed one. Must have done about 4 years with it by the time I sold that car. No signs of any acid corrosion like seen in some scary photos.

I guess the question is. How long are you keeping the car. If it's only intended to be for a few years. Stick a sealed lead acid battery in and don't worry about it. If you plan on keeping it until you die...be a bit more picky.
