I tried post processing some shots to try and introduce a 'moody' element, but there was seemingly nothing to work with.

if you shot in RAW you could resort to.......hdr. one stop down and one stop up can often bring out even grey clouds. stuff it into b/w and never tell a soul you used hdr.Crap skies are perfect for LE minimalist pics ...

Yep, Black & White is your best bet I reckon... the colour version of the below looks dreadful...
