I use my personal car for travel to and from clients sites.

In 2011-12 I had two employers. Can I claim the tax relief at a higher rate for the first 10,000 miles from each of them?

I'm pretty sure it's an annual allowance. so limited to 10,000 miles for all employments.

I had the same a couple of years ago 1st employer 35k and 2nd employer 14k, both first 10k's rebated at the higher rate, you need to fill in separate claim forms for each employer, nice rebate that year.

That's contrary to what I thought. I may be wrong though.

I was wrong smile.

It is DEFINITELY 10,000 PER EMPLOYMENT.

HOWEVER, the employments cannot be associated with each other in any way. Therefore, if you incurred 9,000 miles in employment 1 and 8,000 miles in employment 2, you can claim at 45p per mile for both employments.

However, if the companies were linked in any way - such as common directors/shareholders, or one company was a subsidiary of the other, then you would only get 10,000 at 45p and the balance at 25p.

Eric

Have you got a reference in the HMRC manuals for this?
