I am about to buy my first Range Rover off a family friend....it's a 61 reg Vogue SE TDV8 4.4 is fully loaded with fantastic extras like retractable steps, exterior design pack, dual view sat nav, factory fitted DVD. auxiliary heating etc. it has only had 1 owner and has 30,000 miles, and will cost 45k.

Can any range rover enthusiasts tell me whether firstly this is a good price/buy? Secondly if I want to keep the car for 2 years what would you think the residual value would be doing average miles?

Is that a bargain, dunno...

As for residuals, you're probably looking at circa £30k in 2yrs but bear in mind that an all new Range Rover has just been launched, so that may well change things.

Price doesn't seem too bad, a dealer car with that spec/mileage would probably fetch £47k+.

If you got it for that price and went to sell it in 2 years time, with 55-60k miles, you'll be looking at low-mid thirties privately, perhaps very low thirties on a trade in.

It's an "ok" price but not a bargain. New Rangie shifts the game significantly - it isn't just an update or a new model following the same formula - it, in theory, significantly raises the bar (a lot lighter, more roomy, more luxurious, far more economical yet better performance, better road handling, allegedly amazing off road ability improved by new Terrain response and lots of clever tech) so I'd put my money on it really hitting the L322 prices - the nearer you are to the model change the more it'll be felt.

2-3 years down the line I'd expect to have lost 15-18k on that deal in depreciation. It'll be a bigger loss than, say buying a 3 year old car a few months back.

My money would be on buying an 09 version of what you're buying and the hit will be less... then save the change and some extra to prep for buying one of the latest shape RRs when they come down to a good price 2nd hand.

Alternatively protect yourself against the depreciation a bit more and get the car for more like £40k bearing in mind they're getting an easy sale and it does them a favour of avoiding tyre kickers and LR dealership offers. £40k might be a cheeky ask but not a million miles away from what you'd need to have a good price.

Just a thought to add to the mix. It's deliberately negative to help counter the overly positive excitement you'll have at owning such an awesome car no matter what price you end up on smile

I am just about to let go of my 10 months old Westminster for 57k. It has done 8000 miles. The new TdV8 Range Rover is close to 100k for the same spec so"yes" it is an improved car but I am not sure it is that much better as the Westminster is very very good.

Hi guys, thanks for taking time to write back, I appreciate it....i guess i am looking at only getting 30k for it then if i kept it two years...they seem to lose a lot of money!!

I did a we buy any car to see what value they said and they had 45k, so guessing its not a massive bargain but not bad price either...

i am in two minds what to do as it is such a great car, but feel like i could be taking a chance that when i sell it will lose even more than 15k....

is there a 61 reg car that you could buy for £45k that would be worth more than £30 in a coupe of years? Surely that sort of depreciation is normal for most cars?
