Following on from my rumours thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=123954&f=42&h=0

It's been announced that today Renault F1 parted company with Jarno Trulli and have lined up Jacques Villeneuve to replace him for the remainder of the season. As long as the team is satisfied with him after a test session. Team test driver Frank Montagny may still step in.

Villeneuve will be testing at Silverstone tomorow (Weds) and Thursday if anyone happens to be in the area.

Do you think he'll still fit in a F1 car?

Yep I'll be at Siverstone in just over 2 hours time

Was a great day yesterday 6 teams, 11 cars and a combined total of over 500 laps

Looks like the seat fitting worked out OK - lapping in the low 1:20s

How long will it take for him to upset Alonso with his "I was a world champion" rhetoric I wonder?

He might have been a good driver, but the way he acted make Juan Pablo and Ralph look professional!

The blokes got his head so far up his backside that lump in his throat is his nose.

He's already saying questionable things like "we'll need luck to win races". Thats it mate, think positive.

Still, at least he bought his own race suits and a new helmet in anticipation.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I am not a fan.

Would rather they promoted a young Brit to the job personally who is really hungry for it.

But I'll reserve judgement until he gets out there.

People he's a racing driver so he's allowed to be a little cocky. Lost his father too and yet he is stupidly fearless, I like that. What has he said that so offended people? All I know is that he gave Damon a good thrashing at his first race in Australia. That race is very vivid in my mind, the way he pushed his car and team mate was amazing. He almost won the world championship that year!

We will see how he does in China.

1. Jacques Villeneuve is a world champion. That means he's proven his ability. That means he has every right to tell a non world champion team mate he is better than him.

2. He has been training all of this year so that if a chance to return to F1 came he would be ready. It worked. He seems to want nothing else than to be back in F1.

3. If you were renault and needed to beat BAR to 2nd place in the constructors championship (a matter of several million dollars) would you employ a young "brit" who might have some talent but is unproven in F1 or a world champion who has dozens of wins and can take on Michael Schumacher? Difficult question that...

Oh yes "We'll need luck to win races" - you say he must thing positive? Not thinking that would be thinking positively lucidicrous. The renault is a good car but it is no match for the Ferrari. Therefore to say you will need luck to win races is only realistic.

WAS a World Champion, so WAS better than him. Everyone goes off the boil eventually. Villeneuve and Alonso have never raced competitively wheel to wheel with equal cars. I am not judging either, I just believe that Villeneuve should be pragmatic enough to save his judgement until a accurate comparison can be drawn.

I understand Renault's logic. Wish they'd put Hakkinen in the car instead.

I hope they put Mikka in the rumoured Lamborghini-engined Audi F1 car but they'll need to be quick, his sell by date must be approacing too

Wasn't it something like "If I can't beat Jenson Button then I'm not fit to be an F1 driver", that he said?

2003 Drivers' Championship:
9th Jenson Button BAR Honda 17 points
16th Jacques Villeneuve BAR Honda 6 points

Not to mention the silly mind games he's reported to have played with his previous team mates.

Compare the speed of JV to JB last year and you will find that JV was faster in qualifying often with a higher fuel load. Compare their reliability record and you will see Villeneuve had a mechanical failiure in almost every race.

And for record: Once you've won a world championship you are _a_ world champion. The most recent winner is _the_ world champion. Thefore Villeneuve, Hill, Clark, Lauda, Senna, Schumacher are all world champions.
