I am in the process of planning this years trip, and want to take advantage of the sale that's on at the moment (ends in a few days). If i find that i need to change something, and the booking is no longer valid (it will be a pre-pay booking), is it easy to cancel and get a refund? The trip wont be until June.

The website seems to suggest it's easy and free to cancel. I just wanted to double check smile

Thanks

Check the actual conditions of the booking?

I've done pre-pay and cancelled without any problem, but I assume each deal will have its own terms

"How do I cancel my prepaid reservation?

You can cancel your prepaid reservation online. Select "Car Hire Reservations" from the main menu, then click on "View/Modify/Cancel a Reservation", enter your confirmation number and family name. Once the confirmation page appears, click on the "Cancel" button."

So that looks like it will be ok smile
Ignore my stupid thread. I shouldn't have been so lazy!

That's how you do it but it doesn't say whether you get your money back.

You can cancel it but you pay something like £35 cancellation on prepaid bookings.

"How much is the cancellation fee for a prepaid booking?

- If the booking is cancelled within the first 7 days from the moment it was created, Hertz will provide a full refund of the prepaid amount.

- If the booking is cancelled after the first 7 days from the moment it was created, Hertz will provide a refund of the prepaid amount less EUR 45.00, GBP 30.00, CHF 65.00, SEK 300.00, NOK 300.00, ZAR 450.00, DKK 300.00, AED 200.00, SAR 200.00, KWD 20.00."

You are correct.

I discovered that one way rental was mega expensive and far cheaper to fly - it may have been you who told me that?

I've booked a full size Hertz car on this promotion and discovered that Hertz idea of full size is not mine. Anyone know if upgrading now is possible?

Don't really want to be chancing my luck at the airport?

Does that include the one way rental charge? I found although most websites would let you book it, that was always listed as an unspecified local charge. It could be quite hefty though for that journey.

A smallish car (eg. Chevy Cruze), with good fuel economy. It's for 5,000miles+.

Yes it does. Hertz include that as part of the rate.

Whilst it makes sense to be realistic on the size of the car, especially doing that many miles, if you're old enough to rent anything, and there are more than two of you, don't scrimp too much. Something Focus sized in the UK would be rubbish for anything more than 2 adults going to the North of Scotland from the Midlands. Doing it 3 times, return, would be hell.

In summation, the yank cars are reasonably economical with cruise on the highway, and with fuel still half the price of the UK, don't scrimp on the comfort aspect.

If you do go for the smaller option because it's all you need, if you're doing 1 way rental, ask them if there is anything that needs to go back the way you're going. We upgraded from a Focus to a Chevy Impala in Canada a couple of years ago, for free.

That site doesn't show the one way fee. So it will end up being significantly more expensive.

As a random example, on Hertz, the price virtually doubles for my trip when i set it as one way...

Also, direct on Dollar (who CarHire3000 use), the Fusion is £1150 one way, and £490 not one way. I think that says enough!

It is just me.

I had a Focus last time i was in the US (~3,500 miles) and it was good. It's probably more likely to be 6,000 miles, and even with US fuel prices, going from 35mpg, to 25mpg, would be a significant cost, so it needs to be sensible.

I will have a few days in California at the end for something fun.
