The recession has hit everyone. The option to pop out and lease a 911 over 3 years is not possible anymore. So I’m going to get some Jap retro metal. A Nissan 300ZX or Mitsubishi 3000GT is my choosing. Both are in the pitiful price range the wife has allocated me for my "boy’s toys" as she calls it. £3500. Any ex owners on here that have had one, or have a better option.

I was following a 300zx today, first id seen in a long time, it looked stunning, I always fancied a 3000GT but now i think id have the Nissan I have no experiance of either but id imagine both to be quick slightly overweight cars that have big tunning potential.

Definitely the 300ZX out of those two.

300zx all the way. Much less common, looks awesome, lovely interior (for cars of that period anyway!) and such a cool looking engine under the bonnet if you will be showing it at all.

Just to cement your decision:

LOOK AT IT! Just look how awesome that is!

God i wanted one of these a few years back... This thread certainly isnt helping me NOT want one again... -frantically browses autotrader-

The 300ZX got great reviews back in the day. The 3000GT was rather unloved. I drove a 6 month old 300ZX in the early 90s. Totally standard, with a manual gearbox and it was fabulous. The only 3000GT I drove was a tired example many years later and it was a nasty, heavy old dog. All IMHO of course! smile

300ZX every time, I remember when my dad would drop me off to school in our one, I was then envy of the other kids and teachers.

300ZX.

I loved mine, only car I have sold that I really do miss.
Make sure you go for the twin turbo smile
Nothing went wrong in the 4 years I owned it.

Now I'm a big ZX fan but in reality the 3000 GT is a much better car if the truth be told. Buy the most recent one you can , full history, etc and you'll love it . Just be prepared for the bills when they come..........and believe me, they WILL come.

zx. the gt had too many different styles all arguing with each other on one car.

how much is a manual zx nowadays? have to confess i'd probly prefer a straight 14a instead if it's a similar price.

Have owned both, for me the 300zx was the better screwed together car, performance was similar.

Have been pondering this very question for the last few weeks myself. The 3000GT seems to have an extensive list of expensive things ready to go wrong on it if not already gone wrong. I love the idea of them but they seem to have serious wallet raping potential.

The 300zx seems to be the safer bet out of the two not to mention the nicer and less dated looking. Not sure if there are any other cars worth considering though!

I had a 300ZX TT many years ago and absolutely loved it. Beautiful looking thing in red, and a cracking car to drive. Not a car for the home mechanic though, very little room in the engine bay. The only reason I sold mine was that the potential bills were a little scary to me at the time - turbo replacement was around £2K then (about 12 years ago) and mine had around 55K miles, approaching the time when turbos could go according to the experts of the day. I still have a soft spot for them and a mint low mile TT would be hard to resist even now. I have no experience of the 3000GT though so can't compare.

If you go for a 300ZX the the TT is much quicker than the NA. Avoid grey imprt autos, they had a different auto box from the UK models and have a tendency to break, but import manuals are fine. UK autos are also fine. And make sure the turbos are in good order. Other than that they are basically good solid cars.

I drove a standard TT 300ZX a few years back. Impressive car and pretty quick.

For that price range finding a good condition 300zx twin turbo with a manual (assuming that's what you want) will be hard, anyone ones that haven't rusted away are likely to have been ragged, finding a good honest one is hard work. I would love one, I often have a look but most are non turbo's or auto's which don't appeal

Was touring the north of Scotland with a mate is his Fiesta ST, fully loaded with camping gear right enough but still enough power and handling to make good progress round the excellent roads. Mate was driving, not maximum attack but not hanging around and I saw him do that WTF look in the mirror as a 3000GT appeared behind, passed and shot off into the distance. It hadn't been in sight on the last straight. The speed it went past an already quick moving car was unbelieveable, seriously doubt this was standard.

Have always fancied either of these cars and went on a serious shopping mission for a 3000GT after that trip but the horror stories of how bad a bad one can be was too frightening. Would probably have to be a 300ZX for me.

Both nice cars but I am slightly taken but the ZX. With both cars you will need to be very careful though as it will be very expensive if somethign breaks. Try to get the manual SWB Zed...
