'Cheap' Chimaera...
Discussion
I'm sure I've seen this somewhere else, but thought I'd post and ask...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-TVR-Chimaera-4-0-2D...
£5k for a Chim? Now it's nearly knocking on 20 years old and no info in that advert on mileage and previous history, so I would expect it to need a lot of work... but I'm just wondering apart from the obvious rusty chassis / outriggers issue (poss needing £2k or so to get that sorted), is this not a bit of a bargain for the home mechanic, should someone be looking for a project?
It has however been on sale since October I think... so I suspect either major issues, no proven history or just not the market for it...
I'm still saving for my first TVR, but it just has me intrigued as to if anybody knew this car?

Thought as much - I'm not far away from the place so could go take a look around it - but the price says it all in my eyes. A real shame to see a car in poor condition, but it would take a braver man than me to take it on as a project (equally as I'd potentially run it for a daily!)
I'm in a new job which has me more and more commuting into London, so would potentially run a Chim as a daily when I get to a point where I can sensibly purchase. I used to rack up 15 - 20k a year, now I do about 6k a year daily commute, plus another 2-4k 'weekend' driving so to speak. For now I'm looking at throwing in my FN2 Civic Type R for a cheap daily/comfy barge, but on the flip side, I have that V8 itch and want to do more of my own mech work (I self service the CTR as it is so I'm not averse to using a spanner). There is always something rewarding about fixing the little niggles and preventative maintenance that just amplifies the driving experience, that you feel you know the car, you're part of it and it's yours...
I've clearly been daydreaming a lot this weekend!! I went out to look at a Jag S-Type and there was a chap there with a Chim... and I just thought... is the Jag the place I really want to be?!

It has been on the classified for months (6+ probably). A couple here have seen it and walked away.

Been for sale for quite a while and few people have been to look at it, there's also the one in Brentwood that is on its last legs and resembled a swimming pool inside. Not really worth the hassle at that price
The swimming pool can be cured by sealing around the inspection cover in the inner offside wing ..Don`t write cars off when you need to do research .

Yeah, but it was also a pre serp that was far beyond its good days with a diff that wasn't too healthy too.. leaves not much of a package to want for £5k, don't think that things have not be considered

Pleased to say that mine has dried out at last. No idea why, but you bet I am glad to feel the last of wet carpets behind the seats. Perhaps it is a payoff for all the winter driving I hae been doing recently, heater on full blast?
Its not worth 3k, let alone 5. And the seller won't let it go for a price that would leave you enough funds to do it up and break even.
Unfortunately that poor car is going to perish IMO.
I've seen 2 more cars like this one that will probably suffer the same fate. There are others out there with NO service history, and up for unrealistic money. Found a nice one on autotrader, but the seller never answers the phone. Pillock...

You don`t buy a TVR to get your money back ! your in the wrong market ,go and see what you get for 3k in the classic car market .Unfortunately that poor car is going to perish IMO.

Someone will lovingly restore that car without bullying the seller .
Forget service history and mileage at that type of money ,you look at it and make your own mind up ..It may be twenty years old but it`s a TVR ..your not buying a Ford Fiesta .!!!
If you want a good car spend 10k or but one like this

I'd check the paperwork to find any evidence of previous wax oil work. I know some owners will get the chassis waxoiled every service. If this is the first time it's been waxoiled in a long time then it does sound a bit suspect. Just have to go with your eyes open.Considering going to look at this but i'm concerned about the "recently" waxoiled outriggers.......hiding the rot?

Do you know where to feel for the rot? - I say "feel' as it is tricky to see the start of the rot, as I believe it is on the top of the corners of the outriggers, so somewhat tricky to find without the car up on a rampConsidering going to look at this but i'm concerned about the "recently" waxoiled outriggers.......hiding the rot?
You have to inspect using a ramp. Before you go to see the car phone a small local garage and offer to pay to borrow one for 20 minutes. You will find they take lots of interest and help you! Look for rot in outriggers behind front wheels and in front of rear wheels. Wax-oil is brilliant and doesn't disguise anything so don't worry.

Even better if, like my local garage, they are an MOT station as well. Not that you necessarily want an MOT, but someone who does MOTs day in day out will know where to look for problems. If the car looks good there is then no harm in actually having it MOTd if the seller is willing, though if it has several months MOT left and fails, its MOT is invalid. But then, you do want to be driving a roadworthy car.QBee said:
