Buying a car with export marker = Y
Discussion
Looking at buying a UK supplied car from someone who has been living abroad.
Car is wearing UK plates and has no UK tax or MOT.
On the DVLA vehicle check website it is saying Export Marker = Y
Does this mean if I buy the car I will have to go through a process to re-import the car?! anyone got any experience of this?

If said car is 10 years old or older, it's a piece of pi errm cake to register an import (assuming this is necessary
) - regardless of the export marker status (though DVLA may want to see it - if it's kosher it's a piece of etc still
).
If the car is an import and less than 10 years old then the demands are more rigorous (certificate of conformity required, etc) - but don't be put off by the export marker status if it's a 'genuine' vehicle...
If it's a genuine re-import, then I'd expect the car to keep (re-assume
) its original registration mark
. But you'll need an MoT before applying to register the car
- the MoT certificate will show the VIN as opposed to the current registration mark, natch (remove the existing number plates!!!) - and the insurance certificate will need to show all 17 characters of the VIN as well
(DVLA print a new MoT certificate with the new registration mark on, and your insurer will provide a new certificate and schedule with the new registration mark on as well).
It's a piece of cake with the appropriate DVLA form (V55/5 from memory)
.
All assuming the car is currently unregistered with DVLA,of course
