cheap but decent MP3 player for the gym?

As above really, can anybody recommend a cheap little MP3 player for my lad who is not wanting to risk taking his phone into the gym?

Seconded - I've had a Sansa Clip for years and it's a great little thing with decent sound quality, expandable memory and mine has survived several drops so far. The interface is a bit of a faff if you have a lot of music but otherwise there can't be many better for the price.

The clip itself might not be tight enough for gym work though so you'd need to secure it properly.

i use a speedo aquabeat, that means i dont have to worry about condensation, and i also wear it in the swimming pool :-)
