Morning gents, after a bit of a restoration I'm now putting my trusty Landy back into regular use and have discovered the above problem. It had a gearbox and tranfer case rebuild a couple of years ago, and has been laid up or being rebuilt ever since. I'm not sure if it was an exchange from Ashcrofts or rebuilt internally by my mate's garage as I never got a bill for it (long story).

In the first couple of days of using it I noticed the diff lock light illuminate briefly when manoevring but it disappeared after I made sure it was off and did the old reverse and turn to make sure it wasn't wound up. Now I completed the long journey up to the land of turnips last night and when I backed into a parking space on full lock this morning got a nice twang and rattle!

Something wrong, something that needs adjusting or normal for a newly built transfer box?

My TD5 was doing the same thing after some frequent diff lock use last week in the snow.
Seems to have loosened off with time. Did a quick xfr box oil change too.

Jack one wheel up - if it doesn't turn freely your diff is still locked.

When working on my last Defender I found that that there is some fine tuning in the linkages to make sure it 100% engages/disengages.

If you take off the transmission tunnel cover you should see on the drivers side the linkages. For the diff lock there is a pivot point half way down the linkage which can be screwed in/out and locked in place with a nut. When it had been removed on mine I had obviously screwed it too far in on refitting meaning it wasnt able to engage diff lock properly.. Simple case of removing the pivit pin and unscrewing a couple of turns..

Saying all of the above mine never got to the point of making and crashes and bangs so lets hope yours hasnt now made things worse.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Right, fairly confident the diff lock isn't stuck on completely as it'll still light up the inside front wheel if you're heavy footed going briskly round a roundabout (couldn't be arsed to jack it up hehe), sounds like having a butchers at the linkage adjustment might be the way forward.

Save for any other suggestions I'll report back once I've had a look under the transmission tunnel.

You'll be jacking it to replace busted half shafts if it does turn out to be locked.

Fairly sure one would have gone by now!
