I'm tempted by this car... are there any known issues or major reasons why I should avoid it? Fuel injector issues?

Just bought a petrol V70. Lovely place to sit, but they do suffer from a few issues. To the above, i'll also add that front wishbone bushes are prone to wear, so make sure the car feels stable in a straight line. Mine wanders around the road quite alarmingly at the moment.

basically anything made of rubber perishes, think various bushes, (front lower wishbone x2, ARB drop links x 4, engine top mount as mentioned)

autos are chocolate, but this is a manual so no bother

that is by no means 'cheap', especially at those miles

IF its backed up by a solid SH and drives well its a fair price. V70 D5s keep their value incredibly well.
i was offered £700 by WBAC for my 100k 2001 v70 2.4t (not diesel, i know, but MUCH fewer miles and had every bell and whistle) and achieved a round £1000 on part ex, last week.

whichever way you look, 188k is a lot of miles and the car has no spec

Yes you should, but I'm not sure that particular car is particularly good value.

Personal experience of V70's are as follows:-

Father in law had a 2001 2.4 NA petrol Torslander. It was sold at 65k miles in 2008, constantly had electrical gremlins, i believe it had the ECU swapped 3 times by the Wakefield Volvo stealer. It was a loathsome and awful car.

Guy who lives over the road from me has a mint looking 2.4LPT XC70 on a W plate with low miles, again similar issues with electrics except he and I know cars so we spend an afternoon going over the thing with multi-meters looking for wiring faults, and found a few broken wires, This was VERY time consuming. Also it has snapped a rear spring (but never tows anything) has had warped front discs and auto box issues but then they are known for being poor.

Personally i wouldn't touch this shape of Volvo due to the above. When i was a nipper my old man had a 740 that went up to 280k, and then later an 850 5cyld Diesel (audi engine?) that was solid as a rock to well over 250k so i am by no means anti Volvo!

Nice enough cars but that one's no bargain.

Don't quite understand why everyone is saying this is no bargain. If I look on Autotrader for P2 V70's with a diesel engine, there is only ONE cheaper than this, and it has over 200k miles on the clock.

This would appear to be a pretty cheap V70 D5, and if it's in reasonable condition then it makes a good buy.

- Handbrake shoes can delaminate and destroy the hub. A £20 part that is badly designed. If they wreck the hub its £1000s to fix from a dealer or £100s using 2nd hand parts.
Also applies to the S60 frown

Mine cost just under a Grand to fix from an indie using new parts (1x new hub/upright and 2x rears discs and pads)

That was the only issue I had with the car in 5 years though.

Buy a boxy V70 2.5D. Proper Volvo and a good one is sub £1000

Also if you go for the 2.5 VAG unit you can throw run it on Bio diesel which will save you some money, I think there was someone om the Vegoilbio forums running one on straight veg, but its been a while since used chip fat as motive power so i can't be sure.

I know the D5 injectors don't like Bio though.

I think the Volvo version of the 2.5 had a better fuel pump (and the VW transporter version of the same), thus enabling Bio use, where as the Audi version didn't and is costly to fix, which is a shame as I always fancied running an A4 2.5TDI soft top on Veg!
