Self assessment filing deadling.
Discussion
31st January right?
I've had extreme difficulty registering online, and receiving my ID and password with HMRC. There has been an ongoing dialogue with them for a while now, and while they've actually managed to get my password to me, I've still got no user ID.
I have been on the phone with them again this morning, and they've informed me the filing deadline has been extended until Febuary 15th? Is this correct? I can't find anything relating to that on the web, so I'm suspicious!
Cheers.

Not heard of any filing deadline extension.
Not heard of any reasons why a deadline extension might be made this year - it's usually because they have technical issues - which they haven't had this year, so far.
When did you first contact HMRC to notify them that you needed to file a self assessment tax return?

Had the paper return since april. It was registering online I've been procrastinating with. My own fault. Probably. I registered and then heard nothing. Started pestering mid november time. Not heard of any reasons why a deadline extension might be made this year - it's usually because they have technical issues - which they haven't had this year, so far.

I spoke to them this morning also as i've yet to receive my login details/password - found out they send them 2nd class so now i'm pretty much at the mercy of the postal service ! When I asked about appealing if it arrived after the 31st (I requested it back on 15th Jan) they couldn't give an answer so would presume there isn't any extension...

Thought it sounded a bit funny.HMRC did say that they would TRY to issue all the necessary codes etc in time for 31 January IF applications for the codes were made before 21 January. But nothing was guaranteed.
If you already have the normal Self Assessment Unique Tax Reference (UTR)in your possession, you could get a friendly accountant to submit the return on your behalf - for a fee
. The UTR will be shown on any correspondence you've had from HMRC of a Self Assessment nature.
Accountants will have all the necessary filing codes in place. They use the same filing code for all their clients. All they need from the client is the taxpayer's UTR and the basic details that need to be entered on the return.
The accountant does not need to be formally appointed as the taxpayer's agent to allow them to submit the return.

As I understand it, HMRC have sent the letters, repeatedly, but it's our postal service that's lacking. If you already have the normal Self Assessment Unique Tax Reference (UTR)in your possession, you could get a friendly accountant to submit the return on your behalf - for a fee

Might appoint an accountant. Better than paying the fine!

You said you received your password - what else are you expecting? HMRC do NOT send the User ID - its shown to you during the online registration process and you are told to save it carefully!Might appoint an accountant. Better than paying the fine!
No issue with the post or HMRC here - look in the mirror!

'Fraid it's slightly more complicated than that. If I was registering from scratch it'd be a doddle. Anyway, I'm not and it isn't, and they ARE sending it out to me.No issue with the post or HMRC here - look in the mirror!

EDIT : It has actually arrived in today's post. Wahey. Don't need it now

Got my User ID resent (lost it on my old PC - although I did have prior return id's) and received within 5 working days, so possibly you have a problem with your post.
As to an extension, last year I was given an extension to Feb 12th, due to issues sending out the returns. Not sure if this is in place for this year. Normally they are very helpful on the phone, they could tell you if any extension applied to you?
