My name is Steve and I want a Panda 4x4.

There, I've said it.

I love my cars, I love driving and although I've not yet had the pleasure of a rumbling V8 I've mostly always had a 'drivers' car.

However, every so often I get the desire to buy a car based on ridiculously practical reasons, this time it's the little Panda of which I've had a secret crush on for the last year or so.

This year I will be be getting rid of my MX-5, I've covered 42k in two years in it and it's toured the Highlands as well as Europe, I've loved my time with it and any upgrade would have to be pretty special.

Or I'm simply daydreaming and simpy being a victim of 'lifestyle' marketing?!

Great car, nothing wrong with it. If you want one, buy one.

I really dig the new Panda. I don't know if it's too much top gear but I think they're nifty. My wife likes the 500 but I've been trying to convince her it's the same car underneath. Not working.

The 4x4 is supposed to be quite good at being a small 4x4 too.

Nothing wrong with that.

I bought a Berlingo because it was cheap, if another decent one came up for sale I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

One of the things about being a petrol head is that there isn't one set rule or type of car we must all like, and as much as I love the idea of an F40 or Zonda in my dream garage the attraction of basic or utilitarian cars is very strong.

I really like the Skoda Yeti. To the point that I was considering getting one instead of the Q7.
I also like the Nissan Cube, it must be something about cars that look like vans.

Oh yes.

I need a Land Rover Discovery TD5 in my life. It would be used to commute and do all my daily bits and bobs that my current normal daily does perfectly.

The Discovery would be noisy, large, unreliable and anything that goes wrong would probably cost £1k+ to fix.

I still need one though.

Eta: it would be a 100,000 miler, around ten years old, so even more unreliable than any new Disco.

I really like the Panda and whilst the chunky 4x4 version looks and drives very well, it's heavier, slower and less economic than the FWD models (talking about the previous generation up to 2011 which I assume is what you are looking at?).

Unless I really needed the 4x4 aspect I'd be more tempted by the cheaper, faster and more economic FWD versions (or even the 100HP if I was spending a little more).

I have a strange yearning for a 1.9 BMW Z3. I don't want a more powerful one, I just like the idea of the reasonable economy of running the 1.9 and the leftfield looks.

I know they get panned on PH but I drove a 1.9 Z3 a few years back and it was fine. Went ok, stopped ok, looked good and built quality was high.

I live in the London area anyway so I never get to go very quickly most of the time anyway.

They are very much 'cool cars you see on holiday' type cars, they look so right in the European sunshine.

Test drive booked for the twin air version on Saturday, this could be an interesting experience biggrin

Yep, if I had a Z3 it would probably be a 4-pot. They're lighter and better balanced than the sixes.

Abarth 500,

Numb steering, sit on it rather than in it, not that fast, Pointless rear seats yet.

Yet weirdly I still want one. Meant to have, 'grin factor'.

I suppose thats what DD are for, youve got your razor edge sports racer with its 50/50 weight distribution for fun, yet it dosnt matter about your DD being the best in class, you can do a anti PH and buy a car on character rather than how well it drives.

Not at all. They are different to the MX5, different balance, more relaxed. I've owned both, and loved them for different reasons. Nowt wrong with them, and I think the 1.9 is a better everyday car (esp in a city).

Glad it's not just me, I love the idea of having acres of land or a farm and going around in the new Panda 4x4 getting it incredible muddy! I'd be tempted to have it wrapped matt green too like a little tank.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

I'm useless at offroad driving, so it would never be used for its proper purpose. However, despite this, since it's available for shed money I'd be able to stomach the running costs, right?
