The original 600cc engine does have a habit of developing a small misfire, I can't remember the cause, which results in a burnt out exhaust valve on the effected cylinder.

Very common problem, usually caused by a blocked breather pipe, there are companies who specialize in Smart rebuilds on the internet who will rebuild the complete engine for around a grand.

http://fudgesmart.co.uk/ Seem to be well respected amongst Smart owners, they will also collect depending on your location from them.

What smart as there have been several different engines. What is the reason they are saying it's failed?

I doubt a full rebuild is needed. Also when you say local dealer, are you meaning a Merc main dealer or indi? How old is the car and what's it worth, you might be better off paying much lower labour elsewhere.

Depending on what smart it is there are dedicated forums that might be more helpful than here.

Oh yeah you might want to consider a used engine replacement.

What car is it?

I spoke to fudge not long ago when they where doing some work on my Roadster and they said they've never had to rebuild a roadster engine.

Cumbria Smarts will rebuild an engine for £750 including labour.
