This car seems ideal to me, relatively inexpensive to buy (i'm assuming the perceived running costs are to blame), discreet styling hiding the available performance, well specified and im presuming fairly bulletproof.

Would welcome any comments, as i might just be going to look at one in a few days.

I had the 2.0 T Aero, decent enough car, mine was remapped to 250 ish bhp, the same power as the 2.8., pretty quick really, certainly in the mid range, handled ok, no finesse and not much fun but very effective, crashy ride and the interior looked nice but isnt a patch on the german stuff, really built down to a price. Brakes were very good and was realible in my ownership, the reamp slipped the clutch a sometimes, the 2.8 is a car I have always wanted to try for comparison, I would make a very cheeky offer, buyers market for these cars now, very limted number of buyers after one.

Is this the same or a very similar engine that features in the Vectra VXR ?

On the manual ones the early models (2007ish) they quote 250bhp & 0-60 in 6.8 secs.

Later ones have 280bhp and a claimed 0-60 in 5.4 seconds.

Thats serious speed for not much cash in some cases.

Future SOTW surely ?

Yeah it's the same engine as the vectra vxr. I had a 2.8 aero convertible with the hirsch remap. Cracking engine and nice noise too boot the 310bhp wasn't too shabby ether :-)

Hirsch must have done you a one off special then as its marketed as a 275bhp upgrade to everyone else

to the O/P its a great engine you wont be disappointed, a remap really brings it to life but expect 18-25 mpg around town, 30+ is acheivable on a long motorway run

No, the hirsch map for the 2.8T was 250 standard put upto 275 although dyno figures suggest closer to 300 bhp

The newer 2.8T was 280 standard raised by the Hirsch map to 300 although its been withdrawn for some reason, there has never been a 310 bhp map offered by Hirsch for the 2.8T

I've had one. Great car. Was a manual which was better as the auto box was a bit crap..

Bad points - coils are very weak and quite expensive. Timing chains can stretch! Which in effect writes the car off.

The engine is identical hardware wise to the vectra vxr. Check their forums for more info.

Quite a few chaps on UKSaabs have the 2.8, as mentioned coils are a weak area. The Hirsch remaps are good, one of the top bods from the saab owners club had his 2.8 Hirsch dynoed, 302bhp and 420nm.
Chains can stretch, a member on PH had to have them done on his turbo X, 25 hours labour iirc, although he received some financial input from the new Saab parts supplier.
