Soooooooooooooo

My girlfriend is going to Germany for a uni-study-abroad-thing placement, she originally intended to take the rover 75.

After an altercation with a bus, 2 of our cars are off the road. That leaves the Chimaera which was feeling pretty snug in its garage.

We have been given rental cars. 2 problems with that: When the car(s) gets fixed, they'll want the toyota(s) back. And she said that she would die of boredom taking the toyota.

So, not wanting her to be killed by the car, I suggested taking her Chimaera. hehe

So, prepping the car for a long trip.

Minor service
Replace coolant

Things to keep in the car:

Engine oil
water
brake fluid
Spanners and general tools.
Tyre-weld
spare phone + charger

I've drawn a complete blank on what else she should take.

Anyone got suggestions / experiences or advice for such a thing, especially this time of year? Or should I just book her flights? laugh

First time she'll have driven abroad (usually I do it). She insists she wants to use a car while over there.

Spare coil, rotor arm, relays, clutch fluid, throttle cable. All relatively small items but could save the day. biggrin

A selection of fuses, including a 100A fuse.

One of those big stout jumbo paper clips - useful for shorting the Otter switch.

Definitely a rotor arm, ignition amp and a long HT lead. Or change some of these preemptively. How old is the coil?

Some basic tools: screwdrivers, pliers, spanners or a socket set.

Bear in mind that winter tyres are also a legal requirement in Germany during the winter months.

I would suggest flying or taking the hire car (remember to check this is ok with the hire company).

There's a high probability that you won't be allowed to take the hire car abroad. You definitely need to check before doing that.

Phoned up the friends she is staying with today. There's very little public transport where they are.

She had Continental Winter Contacts fitted (i think, i'm too lazy to look) a few weeks ago. I drove it and they are awesome. You can get away with flooring it in 2nd on a wet day.

I thought about buying a £500 banger, but when you put winter tyres on, and then factor in the cost of insurance, and changing them back to summer tyres. It mounts up. And then there's the reason it was £500, it will break down.

It's looking more and more like she's going to take her Chimaera. (She certainly is keen on doing so)

Great suggestions so far, thanks. I'll send her on her favorite task. Shopping.

Have a scan through the forums, you should find links to a couple of garages that still provide service for TVRs in Germany.

I think it's mandatory to carry a breathalyser kit now as well.

That's France, not Germany. No fines will be issued for this yet. smile

Heaven forbid your wife/partner has an accident, but even if it's only a parking knock a European Accident Statement form is a must. Both parties use the form and the questions are in both languages.

I used one of these when hit by a Frenchman in Switzerland and still managed to reclaim my excess in England because I used the form.

Use the site below to download the appropriate form in English/German or English/ French etc.

The French Government has postponed the introduction of the law that required you to carry a breathalyser kit. See http://tinyurl.com/bg68x2w I doubt it will ever be reintroduced.

Surely your not going to let her, I'd pull a lead off the day before and just can't get the part in time! Joke girls. Your either nuts or you have a great partner, goodluck. What's wrong with a bicycle.
