In a few weeks I'm going driving in Germany for the first time. Route is basically from Switzerland to Netherlands so will be taking in quite a lot of Autobahn.

Can anyone tell me how to recognise an unlimited section? And do you have any tips for driving on them?

(Car is a BMW 730d, so it should feel at home!)

Thanks

Loplop

Do not under any circumstances confuse "unlimited" with "must go as fast as possible at all costs"

Don't stay out in the outer lane. There will always be someone faster than you.
Think of it as a derestricted overtaking lane and practice good lane discipline.
Being flashed is not rude, just normal.
Trucks will still pull out (on 2 lane sections) to overtake.
Watch your speed differential.

Its not fun when you are going 130mph and a lorry wants to pull out in front of you

Leave lots of space!.......

if you are tramping on, and the lorries are doing 55 mph you'll soon catch them smile
if you spot 2 lorries in the distance, maybe the odd quick flash, (of your full beam) to let them know your approaching at speed smilejust incase 1 is getting ready to pass the other.
i do a fair bit of night driving on the autobahns, sadly at 55mph, and have seen some serious speeds from passing cars smile

Indeed. A flash means "I'm coming through" and not "Please pull out, I've seen you"

How to drive on them... carefully!! If you pull out to overtake someone at 100mph, it's quite possible someone will be coming up behind you at a 100mph closing speed.

"Unlimited" doesn't mean "drive as fast as you like". Excessive closing speeds and/or driving quickly in poor conditions are still extremely dangerous.

Keep checking your mirrors and be careful near slip roads. As had been said above, testing your ABS from 160mph is bloody frightening. Flashing of lights is normal and means 'please move over' and be careful in the roadworks on the A5 (I assume you are going that way) as the lanes can become very narrow.

I've been doing 150ish on a clear road and been passed with a clear 50mph(ish) a couple of times... mostly outlandish machinery.

Coming back last year, I was sitting on the limiter at 260kph and an Aventador shot past me like I was going backwards. It was fking awesome!

To echo others, good lane discipline, use your mirrors and be very aware of the potentially huge closing speeds of other cars.

Also be aware that some people will join the autobahn from slipways at very high speed if the road is clear.

In general, I found the driving standards in Germany to be considerably better than the UK

biggrin
meant to add, alot of the autobahns have alot of stretches that have overtaking bans for wagons of a daytime, these are well signed.

Build up to a speed you're happy with, don't go banzai as soon as you see the derestricted sign.

And watch out for Belgian & Dutch registered cars, fking nutcases.

If you've had to brake hard several times from very high speeds, be aware that your brakes might start to show the strain.

Indeed. Yet they still have a substantially higher accident rate... take that lesson to heart if you're driving there - if you drive like most people do in the UK you will be a complete menace.

I remember driving in Italy once. I was applying some Tuscan flair and carrying a fair pace myself when a white Lamborghini Diablo overtook me like I was standing still. Awesome!

OP, just be careful out there. Always be looking in those mirrors. I know people in the UK driving on motorways like to switch off, but on the autobahn there is the potential for some serious machinery to be doing some real speed and a lazy drift into the outside lane could cause real trouble.

I would also expect to see your fuel consumption drop off a cliff if you want to carry any real pace, as the small diesel engine in your 730d will have a lot of weight to haul about.

And the Swiss, who do treat an infinite speed limit as a target once they have escaped from Switzerland. So much bottled no-speeding angst... wink

They also don't seem to stick to the posted limits either!

Another one to put on the list to avoid are lorries from eastern europe.
