Quick question about travelling time...

I wonder if anybody can answer a quick question about travel time.

I'm often expected to do very long days as part of my job which can see me travelling and not returning until about 11pm at night. This is "goodwill" as I understand it.

I've heard that you must have at least 12 hours between shifts by law. Is this true and does it apply to travel time?

It's 11 hours and does not include commuting IIRC

Recently I've had 17 hour days and then in for 9am the next day.

maybe your boss mistook 'travel time' for 'time travel', at least that way it would work...............probably

What type of work is it? how long have you worked for the company and what was your understanding when you took the job? Also is it in a company or private vehicle and if private do you get travel/fuel money?
If it is tiring work with this amount of travel I would suggest you are being put in a dangerous position by your company and indeed bosses could be held liable if you had an accident through tiredness caused by making you work long days.
I spent 3 years soaking up 2 hours a day travel but I was getting travel money for it and it advanced my career so worth it.

I work in medical research travelling to hospitals. Worked there about 7 months but done the job for years. New line manager and I have already discussed, I did make it perfectly clear. I do it until the research is finished (I reckon I can last a year), then I want a promotion and more time in the office or I'm gone.

It just became apparent today that my comings in are now being monitored, i.e. I often don't make it in for 9 and I'm pretty brazen about it (nothing to hide in my opinion). Seemed fine but I wanted to know if I was covered by any legalities, apparently not.

They're a decent company, have said they'll keep an eye on it and I'm not near breaking point yet though. I'm going to start billing them for overnights. Cheers for the concern though!
