A friend knowing I'm an Engineer and also a part time car enthusiast asked me this at the weekend? and for once I didn't have an immediate answer smile - but pondering awhile my answer would probably be the:

Ford Capri - it bought a real quasi sporty alternative to the masses used to some rather antiquiated and dire dross - 1600E wasn't too shabby either smile

This thread has original mini written all over it and I said it first!

A revolution in design and manufacture that influenced pretty much everything which went after. An absolute marvel of a machine, and yet obtainable by the masses. A groundbreaker and a massive success.

Really? rot, draw string door handles, structural integrity of a cardboard box..

Granted, it was an epic concept of packaging and propulsion..but the execution left much to be desired!

Beetle or 2CV immediately spring to mind.

(Not that I like, or would want either)

Also one where the least compromises were made or iMposed on the designer, so original RR, Evoque ( unaltered from concept to road) Citreon DS, mini (someone else got 1st shout), MR2 original, 205, I think there are lots.
Conversely the worst culprits are where the bean counters have imposed utter mediocrity on the desig, so pretty much every Ford of the 70-90's except Sierra, all present Toyota except the 86 , most modern Hondas - do they intentionally design out all the 'delight'?

From a purely aesthetic design point of view, the Lamborghini Miura. Stunning to look at.

And to take it a step further, he said if he could have designed any car, it would be the Porsche 928 IIRC.

While the Miura is beautiful, the Countach would get my vote as something that was something completely new, and has stood the test of time. I know its a pig to drive, but in pure design terms it was and truly stunning. Just think what the man in the street was driving, when that was designed.

I'd also go with the classic mini for packaging, and 911 for length of production. I know the 911 changes every few years, but its essentially the same basic design.
