Stepdaughter is 17 this year and we have had the discussion about first cars, Ka, Polo etc. I also mentioned that I would try to get her insured on my old Defender 110. “why would I want to drive that old wreck” was the response.

What is the “yoof” of today thinking, a 110 is cooler than Samuel L Jackson dancing the Gangham! bowtie
Any youngsters out there with an opinion on this?

Picture of said “cool mobile” for judgement.

Whilst I personally would have LOVED a defender as my first car, I can see 90% of girls not thinking the same.

Great car, but the fuel costs I assume would also be pretty LOL compared to a Ka or similar, then the general comfort level (not saying a Ka is good but it doesn't throw you around so much and is quieter etc).

I guess to a girl they would rather dive a mini deathtrap under the illusion that its "easier to drive".

There's not much cooler to be honest.

I may be a little biased though.

All Defenders are cool, but it's gotta be a 90 for the under 40s, and a 110 for the oldies wink

As an 18 year old who considers his '97 Civic far too modern, I think I'm a bit biased.

My first car at 17 was a Series III LWB hardtop with the 2.6 straight-six. Good job petrol was cheap back then, but with 14 mates crammed in the back and contributing to costs I sometimes made a profit. 50mph max wasn't good however.

Would have loved a defender then (and still do!)

A Land Rover Defender is "cooler than the other side of the pillow". Fact.

My first car was a D90 (300Tdi) at 16 which I learnt to drive in. Awesome and hugely cool imo.

Are you really surprised a 17year old girl doesn't want to drive a defender 110? Offer her a 90 and she'll be over the moon hehe

Don't know what she is on about?

This was my wagon at 19.. sold my Mercedes C280 Sport to buy it wink Super cool green laning and general daily snotter! Didnt even have working locks and I'd know it was parked when it was touching something, a wall, a tree, another car..

Came to me as standard, I fitted the modular wheels with 265 tyres and safari snorkel. Disco TDi 200 engine as well.

Girls are fickle creatures, I bet if it was painted/wrapped a nice colour and garnished with some pink steering wheel cover and dice she would love it. See what she says.....

A Tdi Landy is likely to be 24-26mpg, higher on a run. KA's despite there little engines are only mid 30's mpg wise as a rule. So yes a difference, but if she's only doing 6000-8000 miles a year it wouldn't actually be a huge cost difference.

Is this what we're doing now?

Not judging, just trying to work out what is acceptable.

I had a Series III at 16.

I thought it was cool and still think old Landies are.

Is this the first ever recorded instance of a young lady having more sense than a large number of men?

I've always had the option of using a 90 or 110 but I always knew my old peugeots were the better vehicle 95% of the time.

I love the idea of owning a Defender.

I hate the idea of living with it.

More like sub 20's mpg.. that was my experience..
