So I've been making pizzas at home recently and really enjoying them. However the one area where I feel they are let down is the tomato sauce I use. Generally I just use a cheap jar of pasta sauce, but thought I would see if anyone has a recommendation for a great pizza sauce you can either buy straight out of the box, or make easily yourself.

Chop an onion, fry off till nicely softened and just starting to colour
Mash up a clove of garlic, chuck it in
Squeeze of tomato purée, cook it out for a minute or two.
Chuck in a tin of tomatoes and cook it all down to a reasonably thick consistency
Season
Blend to a nice smooth sauce and spread on pizza. Make a big batch and freeze the excess so you're ready to go next time.

If you want to make it more interesting try chucking in some oregano or basil, though I quite like keeping it fairly plain and make the pizza toppings interesting.

^ I would agree with this if you have the time and energy. Making a big batch and freezing the rest makes sense.

In a pinch a carton of passata will do but I find it a bit "wet" and leads to cheese/toppings sliding off. I suppose you could reduce it down a bit. Or in dire emergency use tomato puree, but very thinly spread as it is quite rich, sprinkle a bit of italian seasoning and salt and pepper on top.

mmm, pizza.... yum

Mash up some garlic and fry, add a can or two of tomatoes and some basil and oregano. Season well. Let it bubble for five minutes then strain the lot through a sieve and heat again to reduce it, adding some tomato puree for extra tomatoeyness. Without the sieving you'll end up with lumps in it.

Add sugar and salt for a lift to the sauce. Never fails & a little goes a long way.

After years of searching and experimenting, I can recommend Dalmios meatball sauce

Passata is no good unless you reduce it a fair bit

Try Lidl 'Sargona' chopped tomatoes, either plain or with herbs, garlic, or al arrabiata.

These are the thickest and chunkiest I've found anywhere, and won't need much reducing.

1red onion finely diced
Fry in olive oil
Throw in 2mashed garlic cloves when onions are done for 1 min.
Salt and pepper.
Glug of balsamic to deglaze pan.
Throw in 1 tin chopped toms.
I then add fresh rosemary, or oregano if u prefer.

Reduce for 20mins till thick and pasty, balance with a splash more balsamic salt and pepper.

Take a tin of San Marzano tomatos and just mash them up, it's all you need for proper pizza sauce

Some very interesting (and complex!) recipes for a tomato pizza base topping!
I always use passata, salt, pepper & a pinch of sugar. I think this is what 90% of Italians do & they know a thing or two about pizza, so I'm told.

I usually buy a tin of Pizza Express passata as it is a lot thicker than everything else I have bought in the supermarket.
