Started looking at 996's. I want a 3.6 sub £15K so I am looking at 2001 - 2003 cars, I would like to keep it below 80K miles as well.

Thing is most of the search returns are targa's, why is this? I see no reason.

OK they don't have the sleek lines of the coupe or the open top of the cab but they have a bit of both, or is it deeper than that do the not have the same drive feel?

Any experiance appreciated

I think that for those of us who want coups, the big sunroof panorama thingie is unnecessary, and for true convertible aficionadoes the experience of a full drop top is very different. It can do a little of each but less of either.

Nothing against them personally but heard they can be prone to squeaks and rattles.

Despite the faintly dodgy rep for leaky targas in the Porsche world I'd have happily had one, actually at the time of looking I could not find a single one up for sale. I was also under the impression newer targas were commanding a bit of a premium as there were not many on the road, I guess not.

Targa's have always been deemed as the poor relation.
I am not a big fan but i can see the popularity as they do offer an element of wind in your hair experience if this is what floats your boat.
The downside varies on different models such as body flex on the older ones couples with leaking seals squeaks and poor lines, i believe the newer ones are an improvement both technically and aesthetically.

seems to be a 996 thing, 997 Targas are imho holding their value better than the coupes

So, question is. Is this leak issue for real or up there with every nine is going to go bang

^ just ask a techie what the roofs are like to fix when you get problems....not good apparently. I also know someone trying to buy a 993 targa & if the roof mechanism doesn't get used for long periods of time, they can become troublesome. FWIW, l should say a mate has a 996 targa & loves it - they are a cult car IMO. l could be converted (sorry about the pun) by the time I've been to Le Mans & back biggrin

Replacing a full targa 'roof' on a 996 isn't cheap. I remember a local indie telling me that an OPC quoted a customer for the job (£6000 I seem to recall), then sub-contracted the job to the indie !! They are a bugger to fit apparently.

My 996 Targa hasn't leaked (so far), a friend had a problem with his that was fixed by cleaning out the drainage channels.

Does creak a bit, but I make sure I keep it regularly exercised. Not for the purist but it has its plus points (extra light in cabin, hatchback).

Low mileage 993 Targa - squeaks, creaks and rattles but no leaks.

996 (as with all I guess) can see a tasty £6000 bill to replace all the motors and cables. Great cars, nightmare if the roof goes wrong.

No PPI inspection can see that coming and it's probably not covered on warranty as wear and tear etc.

That's it in a nutshell, roofline always looked odd to me, and ruined the 911 shape

I have a [964] Targa and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that they are unloved.
30-40% cheaper than a Coupe and the option to whip the panel off for fun open top motoring. I have no desire to track a car so for me an 'unloved' flexi/bendy/creaky/leaky/ugly model is just perfect.
