Cracked Windscreen ....safe and legal?
Discussion
Hi All,
Our Kia Rio 2nd gen (09) has recently had a chip repair failure and Autoglass are happy to replace it under their guaranty. They came over this evening however it turns out the wrong screen has been ordered, and they will likely not be able to complete the job until the middle/end of next week.
I have 2 major concerns:
Firstly the safety of driving with a cracked windscreen/windshield. The guy reassured me that it would be fine to travel at motorway speeds; he tapped the glass quite forcefully and said its fine and safe, even if the crack was to extend. - He also mentioned that its now down as a chip repair failure on their end thus any further chips that we might get won't affect them changing it under their guaranty.
Secondly, what are the legal issues about driving with a cracked screen?
The crack itself is 20cm long, at the top of the screen between the rear view mirror and the drivers line of sight, its right on the edge of what I would say is defined as the 'drivers line of sight'. My partner need to use the car for work, and as I’ve never had to deal with a cracked screen before she used other methods of transport and mates to get to/from work for the past couple of days as we were not sure how safe/legal it was.
Now we have been told its safe to drive, and that the work cannot be done until mid of next week at the earliest, we should be allowed to drive the car. However I cannot seem to find a black and white interpretation that states if it’s legal to drive in that condition. All I have found is apparently if its in the 'drivers line of sight' then you can get ticked off, how formally you can get ticked off I’m not so sure, and as its right on the edge of 'drivers line of sight', thus subjective rather than an objective measurement, wanted to know if we could potentially get pulled over.
Thoughts?

theoretically speaking that crack could happen at any time . so you could hardly be fined for it .
it should be safe as the screen is laminated so it will not shattwr into thousands of pieces . worst that could happen is that the crack will get bigger . unless somebody more qualified knows better

If chip repair was not free on most insurance policies, how many would be as intent/keen on having them repaired?
What's amazing is what the general acceptance is. 'Oh, he said it's filled so it must be... even though it looks the same' and 'it cracked whilst he did it - which is fair enough, isn't it?'
