W124 Beards help
Discussion
Im after an opinion on a W124 CE 30024v
Its fairly local to me, has some history, silver with black leather, 155k and 5 speed auto box
What sort of money would it be worth?
Its advertised for £995, motd until end of the year
Its that bloody bargain basement thread that has started this

I own a 300E so not the same but fairly comparable.
My car has done 152k now and feels great. I have taken people in the car and they have been shocked by the mileage. But these cars hide mileage very well so I would buy on condition rather than mileage. My car did 100k in under 3 years and then had a lady owner who had it main dealer serviced for pottering around in - I see many tatty cars on the market.
Are you happy with an imperfect car, or are you the kind of person who wants to make your cars perfect? There are users on here who are selling W124s for £4k and making a loss because they make them perfect. The "joy" of the W124 is that they are extremely strong and can be run while a little rusty or baggy.
I'd go and look at the car and speak to the owner.
Oh and I do 22.5-28mpg in mine, it doesn't vary. Yours (I use the word suggestively!) may do more due to the 5 speed. At the end of the day it's very little money for one of the best cars ever made.

Price sounds about right, the coupes and saloons are at the bottom of their value curve at the moment as there's plenty about still and people want the estates more.
200-250k + on original engines and transmissions is normal, buy on condition and history rather than miles. Watch the 5-speed box though, it's not as reliable as the 4-speed. If you want to get picky watch for a milky (delaminated) rear screen, non-working seat belt presenters, head gasket issues, rusty brake pipes and front wings.
A lot of car for not much money.

Are you in Scotland? I spotted one locally recently too. I had a 300D a couple of years ago, I'm not an expert but if I know where they rust etc so if you want a second set of eyes when your looking at it let me know...
Rear subframe mounts are bad for going, front springs snap and are scary to change(I have the tool somewhere, used once...)
they are lovely cars though, I'd have another but I've a notion for an SEL/SEC

Oa it was reading your original posts about your purchase that started this obsession.
I have e mailed the owner, seems a very genuine chap, honest about condition, and appears to be a bit of a mercedes beard also, which is reassuring.
Mileage doesn't bother me in the slightest, i was actually hankering after a saloon or estate but this one is local and i cannot be bothered travelling to find a car wrongly advertised, been there and got the T shirt.
Im away for another fortnight, I'm hoping the car will still be available when i return, the location may swing it in my favour

I am indeed, well i am Currently in Baku but however I'm from Aberdeen
The owner mentioned that the rear subframe mounts and jacking points are solid in his email
A 2nd set of "knowledgeable" eyes may well help, as other than rusty wings and jacking point I'm not that sure what common faults to look for in one of these

I purchased mine over the phone and travelled 350 miles to get it - I was very lucky!
I was a mercedes doubter before buying mine on a hunch, I'd always liked BMWs more. The W124 is remarkably well suited to modern life, unlike the E28, E34 or most E39s - I love the E39 528 but every E39 owner has had multi-thousand potential bills recently. They are not up to being run as budget cars.
The early w124s seem to to decline in a more predictable and manageable way. Expensive to fuel, but fundamentally tough. I will not be without a W124 from now on!

Is it the silver one near Aberdeen? The one I was thinking of is a saloon in Glasgow sadly, I'm in Edinburgh so maybe a bit far away.
The silver one has a fairly honest advert and is definitely worth a look-you could travel far and wide and pay a lot more for one in no better condition. If its solid underneath and theres a deal to be done I'd go for it...

Dome it is indeed the silver one, however I'm watching the one in Glasgow as it seems to be a great buy, i have a feeling it will top £1000
Not just me that likes that colour scheme then
Have a look on www.w124.co.uk to see what these cars can sell for, for this kind of money you'll not get a minter but with some luck and patience you should be able to get a good one...
