Would it not make sense to improve standard car security to include trackers etc?

Also a keypad or similar which required a pin as well as a key would ensure that the theft of keys did not allow the theft of a car.

Car theft is still very common despite a general lack in reporting compared to the 80's and 90's.

so.. you have a Pin code and your car keys are locked in the family safe..

would you really not just give the scrotes all they wanted to ensure they left ASAP instead of causing harm to your family?

Car gets nicked

Owner buys another car

Yeah I can see car makers trying to stop that

Add in the inconvenience of having to type in a PIN number everytime you start the car when car makers have removed even the effort of turning a key i can't see it being a strong selling point.

But getting to the heart of the matter as long as the justice system seem more interested in looking at people posting on Facebook about car thieves then actually catching car thieves I really don't see how car makers can be blamed.

Cars are OK, with a few exceptions. Owners need to keep the keys more secure, rather than add cost and complication.

Cars are only being nicked with the keys now and often violence in involved, how is a PIN going to deter someone breaking into your house and holding an axe to your childs throat?

Are people returning to their cars after shopping to find and empty space and broken glass on the floor where there car used to be any more?

i dont want a tracker thank you

if my car goes I dont watn it back ever, ok its gone, its recovered the visable damage is repaired, but what about how the car was driven, ragged stupid etc etc you will never know and the insurance wont repair the engine or gearbox etc if they are still working when returned but go pop 2 days later

get stronger terms for criminals, years ago we used to send them to australia, now we give them a life of luxuary, maybe we can have a criminal cull, after all they do it to seals when there is too many of them and all they do is eat some fish...

On the old E39 BMWs there is a pin feature, you type in a pin when you lock the car and you use it once to restart. Its an OBC option you have to manually set each time if you wish to use it

If they had a finger print system then the theives would just cut off one of your fingers to get in.

Heaven only knows what would happen if the had a retina recognition system for entry (or whatever its called).

Didn't Audi loudly announce this feature on the A8 a few years back?

Then quickly quietly drop it after this started to happen..?

Also seem to recall Peageot had PIN code starting once and dropped it as was a PITA in practice.

What about chip and pin driving licences. Car will not start unless you have a valid license, insurance for that car etc. would need the databases improving and a lot of infrastructure but long term would solve many many problems

Yes they did, I used to have a 306 with it in, was a bit of a a pain having to type a pin in every time, but at the same time it was quite cool because I was only 18 at the time.

So let me get this right.

You want a system that constantly updates to a government database and this database gives you permission to drive.

Mmm not convinced

Add in all they have to do is to nick your driving license to drive your car along with the keys i think i'm not overly keen

I'm not saying you're wrong but - how often does that really happen? Clearly there are nutters out there and it's going to happen sometimes, but how big a proportion of car thefts actually go that way?

The massive majority of stories I've heard of have been people's keys being nicked from inside the house while they slept or similar.
I've never come across a story where a thief actually assaulted someone for their car keys, never mind it happening "often" as you put it.
Are you saying it's 1% of these thefts?, 10%? 50%? -- I'd genuinely like to know.

If you were a habitual car thief in a position where you had to threated someone for their keys, would you want anything to do with assault, or would you run like hell and try another house later on?

Absolutely. On an easily replacable car (eg not a 3.0 RS or 250 GTO) the only party that a Tracker benefits (other than Tracker themselves) is the insurer. Your car will be ragged senseless from cold, up and down kerbs, more than likely by some greasy little baghead in his three stripe tracky bottoms, possibly with his bin-slag in tow. It will be treated with zero mechanical sympathy. Why would you want it back? The insurers will rape you come renewal time whether your claim was for a set of locks and recovery or a total loss. You might as well have the money and go and buy a fresh one, if you've got RTI gap you're even better off.

If they want it its going one way or another. I'd rather it went without my children being harmed or house trashed. If they are really determined to have your motor they will drag you out of it on youn drive as a thread a while ago with a Audi RS4. All these security devices add cost to the thing while manufacturers are trying to reduce costs. What ever is done the true thief is always one step ahead of their systems. Look at the bmw thing with the obd port.

It's all been done before. Keypads, transponders, tracing devices have all fallen by the wayside for one reason or another.

The more difficult it is to steal, the more likely it is that it will turn into aggravated burglary to steal it. If the thief really, really wants it, he will get it one way or another.

It's a shame that we live in a country with such an appalling record of car theft; go to a market in rural France and look at the cars in the car park - there will always be a dozen or more with the keys left in the ignition whilst the owner buys his goods.
