No DRLs on the new Focus?
Discussion
Just an observation, how are Ford getting away without standard fit DRLs on the new Focus?
The EU requirement was that all new models 'Type Approved' from February 2011 onwards must have them fitted without exception, and nearly all new cars seem to comply. However the Focus went on sale after this yet only seems to have DRLs on the higher spec models.
Seems to be the same story with the new Toyota Yaris.

DRLs don't have to be rows of LEDs you know!
I realise that, but it literally has no form of DRLs whatsoever fitted as standard.ED209 said:
Because the focus was tpe approved before the date you mention perhaps?
Potentially, but a lot of cars that came out before that date have them va1o said:

Just use the sidelights don't they?
Nope as you can start and drive the car and no lights come on, nor is there an option in the computer to enable DRLs

Vehicle manufacturers must fit DRL to new types of passenger car and light goods vehicle (car derived vans) type approved to European vehicle requirements from February 2011. In practice this means that any new model launched after this date, and many launched before, will be fitted with DRL.
However, existing models on sale before this date without DRL fitted can continue to be sold and used indefinitely.
Focus would've been approved late 2010, before going on sale early 2011. However, existing models on sale before this date without DRL fitted can continue to be sold and used indefinitely.
The OP is correct - not all models of the new Focus have DRLs. Only the higher-spec cars come with them (I even saw an ST earlier that didn't have them!). I guess the reason for it is that the Focus must have been homologated for sale just before the ruling came in - probably so they can give them all DRLs with the facelift (just like they've done with the new Fiesta). The new C-Max must have also just missed out, whereas all B-Max models all have DRLs.
I think that there is some pretty conclusive evidence out there that cars with lights on during the day are less likely to be involved in an accident with another vehicle or pedestrian, as very simply they are easier to see from much further away. Also many many motorists do not turn their lights on when they should.
Unfortunately the vast majority of motorists need it as they are simply unaware of how to spot hazards in differing conditions, or to consider that they themselves might be the hazard by not making themselves appropriately visible.
If it stops some idiot pulling out in front of me in rough weather, or avoiding a head on because some fool hasn't seen me coming the other way soon enough, then I have to say they're a good thing.
{Awaits PH bandwagon morons to tell me otherwise}
