Hello chaps, a question if you don't mind.

I will be picking my car up later from Colin at TVRSS, I can't wait because it's great weather here and the top will be down on the drive home. I am in no way complaining/annoyed etc. about paying Colin to do the work, he does a great job and it's something I could never do, but, if I could do it, it would save me a fortune and make me able to buy more stuff for the car.

I have noticed from several threads that you chaps meet up and fettle your cars. I was wondering, what kind of work do you do on the cars, is it invite only and would you mind a complete novice joining from time to time?

I am desperate to learn about doing work myself and watching/helping you guys do stuff would be a good start. Also, I had some bad good news from Colin, the tapping noise from my engine is the Cam, so that will need doing at some point. It's roughly £1000 job to get a garage to do it, I would love to save myself the cash.

Nick

Hi Nick, as stated, it could be an exhaust manifold gasket leaking.
They sound like a tick, tick noise and often fools so called experts.

Happy to have a chat and a get together some time.

A cam isn't the hardest job although not one for a novice either.

Is yours a serpent motor?

Yeah, it's a 4.5 Serp engine.

That would be great Peter, if it is the Cam though, what else is worth doing while the engine is 'open'?

If I can save money on not needed to pay 'TVR Tax' then I could buy some more upgrades. Is it a days wrth of work or more?

It's a Saturdays work if you know what you're doing.

Give me a ring and I'll give you more details.

Cheers Peter, I will do that. Don't have your number any longer though. I don't think it will be for a month or so anyway but I like to plan these things.

Cheers for the link, it's not that though. Much more feint and metal-ish, if you understand that biggrin

Someone should set up learning days, you know someone real good, when an interesting job comes in we all pay a little fee and go play with an engine or watch a body lift or whatever. Could we get an NVQ or City and guilds?! Be a great way to sort our cars and learn from eachothers experience, errr maybe that's what you get here, still be great fun. Anybody got a spare classroom and garage we could borrow. I think you just make friends with another Tvr fiend and work it out, more heads are better than one, especially when the one is my old cobweb filled bugger!! Jaguar enthusiast do a similar thing, each forum has an old clever geezer who does lectures and practical lessons, it's really cool, old jags need ad much help as possible!

All of mine have had the "tapping". On each occasion it was the exhaust manifold (like t'other guys)

My manifolds seem to breath out in various places but no tapping, make up a little alley or metal listening device put one end on engine or whatever, the other end near your ear, you should pick up obvious noises. Sounds naff but works!! Stethoscope for engines I think you can still buy them.

Madmax excellent, you are likely to be voted head of year! see there are boffins and friends bursting to re build our country, lol. Let's go and poison the Tvr owner, get the name back, and start the company up again! Considering the poxy sheds they built our cars in together I'm sure us lot could build a brill bit of kit, would it look like a Chim or a Griff, ha ha ha no contest. Sorry you griffters but come on,,,,,, maybe borrow abit of your front end, dreamer nothing but a dreamer!

I`m sure if Colin says its the cam then it will be, he is very thorough, and I believe would have checked the manifold gaskets as the first port of call.

did you ask him this??

Yes I did ask him, he said he checked the manifold gasket. Had a proper chat to him when I picked thw car up, it's no the Cam making all the noise, the followers are the real culprit.

By the way Clive, did you get my mail? Re. 'MIL' light?

A good tip for listening to the exhaust gasket is to buy a cheap stethoscope off ebay (about 3 quid), and just use it with the tube, removing the dish / pad off the end. It works a treat and better than a screwdriver handle against the ear!
