Scrapyard engines
Discussion
Bought an engine from local scrap yard for my sons car, was told its a good one and is covered for 30 days. So pays local mechanic huge sum of money to fit it only to be told said engine is totally f
ked, no compression etc. I can get my money back thats no problem but now i have to pay mechanic to remove the engine and pay him yet again to fit another. Not blaming mechanic as its obviously not his fault but where do i stand legally with the scrapyard ?

Not blaming mechanic as its obviously not his fault but where do i stand legally with the scrapyard ?Thats the risk with buying from a scrapyard. unfortunately trying to save a few quid usually ends up costing more in the long run. the only way to be sure the engine is good is to strip and inspect it before fitting, which costs money.....
if the yard are going to refund you i dont see a way of recouping any more money, they are not responsible for the labour cost.

I imagine the 30 day warranty would only cover the engine itself and not any fitting charges.
They'll probably swap for another but I reckon you'll be stiffed with the installation costs again.
Thought this would be the case, just mad that they said it was a good engine when clearly was not and now its ending up costing me a small fortune. They'll probably swap for another but I reckon you'll be stiffed with the installation costs again.
Suck it up mate, if you go down the scrappy kicking off your more likely to end up in a cubed motor over getting your money back, basically you had a choice between
buying a new engine= massive expense
Buying a reman engine= still costly but has warranty
buying scrapyard engine= cheapest and most likely to be pony
There's a reason why cars end up in scrap yards and you've found the reason why that engines been binned.
You took a punt on trying to save some money and unfortunately it didn't work, don't take this post as having a pop as I've had similar situations in the past and certainly know how frustrating it can be but its a gamble that's not worked out.

My brother has a long running successful garage business, if a customer insists he fits a breakers yard engine then he insists they source it for themselves as he has seen so many rubbish examples. If the engine turns out to be useless (as they invariably are) then the customer has to pay for it to be removed.
The scrap yard does not care as they just have to give the money back or swap it for another piece of junk and the process repeats itself.
As a previous poster suggests, see the engine running before parting with your money.
